Here's a pic from out my front window.......actually came from a guy at work who likes to hunt them Northern camels. Its from up on the Northern Penninsula of Newfoundland. Apparently they like to gather together during late winter.

I had a similar pic from the early eighties taken in the Tabletop area near Gros Morne. There was a guy doing a Newfoundland wilderness calendar and thought he was seeing a herd of some rather huge caribou until he took a better look and discovered a moose herd. There are 32 in the pic I have.

Neat pic!

I saw 8-10 in close close together a few years ago, also near Gros Morne, south of the Tablelands on the way to Trout River. Odd stuff.

I knew there were herds of Caribou in the area, but herds of Moose, learn something new every day.

Great hunting on the west coast of Newfoundland,

Back in about 1993 while timber cruising in Algonquin Park I came over a ridge and looked down over the edge and saw a similar sized herd of bulls before there horns dropped. No camera though, dammit!! I will never forget it, horns everywhere.

I always thought moose were not herd animals. Does anyone know how true or untrue this is.

Really cool pic too!

Yes, Moose are herd animals during the rut and they'll sometimes hole up together during the winter. Ever see a Bull moose with his harem? They also spend a fair bit of time on their own, so I guess its a yes/no situation...depends on the time of year! I've got some pick with 8-12 moose "yarded" up in my old photo albums somewhere.

Ya' gotta' love the Northern Peninsula for great hunting opportunities! Looks like I'll be heading out for Area 2 next Fall...just waiting for the applications to arrive...counting the days, 'eh guys?:D

Where I came from in Northern Ontario, it is refered to it as "yarding up".

It occurs in the latter part of winter, and apparently is a defensive measure against predators, and facilitates feeding after the snow gets quite deep.

Nice picture,
I have seen moose yarded up but not as many animals as that. There is another picture kicking around on the net with about 20 moose or so yarded up here on the island. I was ptarmigan hunting in one area last year and saw 25 or so moose in an afternoon. We have some areas here on the rock with a lot of animals

The most I ever saw was 7 cows,we were sheep hunting in sept. Were sitting on the side of the mountian glassing and they came up the side of the mountain strung out like a pack train.
