Moose hunting rifle recommendations

Stunt gun. :)

No way... it will knock the f@ck out of a moose, you are just not knowledgeable... ;)

A 44 Mag will kill the f@ck out of a moose if you use it at a reasonable distance, choose the right bullet and put it in the right place. I don't even know why this would be in dispute by any knowledgeable person.

Hi all,

I am fairly new to hunting but have a little experience. I plan on going moose hunting and am looking for suggestions for a good rifle and round that will be reliable in northern BC. I have heard the Winchester model 70 in .338 is pretty good.
Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks.

Ive always hunted with my Browning BLR 300 win and never had a problem with knocking anything down. Mind you, right animal, time, distance, all that.
That being said, 300 win can be loaded to knock down pretty much any North American big game. If youre pushing bush and thinking close game hunting and/or smaller game hunting I would reconsider for a slightly smaller load as the 300 will definitely waste meat if shot placement isnt spot on.

Best of luck!

I use a model 70 in 338, I have shot moose with a 30/06 BSA then a Ruger 77, a 300wm A bolt then a model 70, and then 338wm, the moose did not care, I found the recoil from a 300 stouter than from the 338. All of my moose have been taken with shots under 200 yards but I like knowing I can shoot farther. On these shots I would have been comfortable with any rifle down to a 6.5x55. No real logic to it for me I am just comfortable with my 338. As others have said shot placement is key and a rifle you are accurate with is important. Enjoy your purchase shopping for a rifle is fun.

Right on cue, miserable, negative hoyt shows up....

It will indeed kill the f@ck out of a moose, as long as you use it correctly.

I wouldn't suggest a 44 Mg for a northern BC moose hunter though, shots can be from very close to much further than a 44 mag should ever be attempted. While I don't use a 44 Mag, I have killed a few things- some of them bigger than a moose- with a 45 Colt in a lever rifle, which is basically the same thing as a 44 mag.

Real life knowledge.

Anything form a 708 with good bullets up is a good moose killing cartridge. I used a .338 WM enough to decide it didn't do anything more than a 300 did, so for me if I want more power and a bigger bullet I went straight to .375

With todays bullets you can make swift clean kills on large animals without much fuss. I probably wouldn't recommend a .338 for a new hunter due to extra recoil, something a little less in that department can make you want to practice more. The 7RM is a great choice as is a 308, 3006, 300WSM etc etc.

More important is to find the rifle that you like and feels good to you, and buy it in whatever "standard" cartridge it happens to come in.

Ironic... since I was quoting you... pots and kettles, you hypocrite... :)

I'm not going to read through this whole thread, if you can handle the recoil of a 338 yes it will be an awesome moose cartridge as well as a 300 win mag. For a new hunter, you cannot go wrong with a 30-06, lots of rifles chambered for it and lots of factory ammunition . For a new hunter who wants to hunt moose I recommend a 30-06, it's the right choice imo.

I shot a bunch of bull moose with the .30-06, but eventually moved to the .338WM.

I've shot 21 bull moose (never shot a cow or calf), which might seem like an awful lot to some, or make me just a novice moose hunter to some others.
I've taken more moose with the .338WM than anything else.

But for the record, I also took one bull with the .416 Rem Mag.

Dead is dead, and in spite of what some people say, you cannot overkill a critter. And conversely, a moose shot with a .270 is just as dead as one shot with a .458WM.

Easily the 2 most spectacular 'bang-flops' I ever had, were both with the modest .30-06.

For a 'starter' moose rifle, you cannot beat the .30-06.

It's hard to argue that logic, the 30-06 does it just fine and with recoil most new hunters can deal with just fine. The 30-06 isn't one of my favorites, but there is no denying it's capability.

Does caliber really matter all that much or is it more bullet placement that truthfully does the job?

A 7-08 lung shot at 300 yards is just as deadly as a 338 win mag lung shot at 300 yards!

tree ho tree

kamlooky?
Is that you ;)
Sure a tree-oh-tree will do the job and has taken many moose.
But, ammo can be a pia to source for newbie type hunters.
A 30:06 with 165grn corlokts makes good medicine and should be easy to source for most anyone.
A good first rifle would be an older 700 Remington or a Weatherby Vangaurd or even a Winchester Model 70. (lots and lots on options on models)
The .338 will be an excellent choice further on when one has gained some experience in hunting and firearms handling.
Leave the Queen of magnums (375R) for another place and time.
Tight Groups and Good Hunting,Swamp Donkey season is but a couple months away in some regions.
