Moose hunting

A 7mm Rem Mag isnt super duper magnum IMHO. Its recoil is comparable to a 30-06. I have used a 300 win mag and 7mm rem mag in Tikka T3 lites and the difference in recoil was noticeable. The 300 win mag was unpleasant to shoot. Is there any support for the notion that a 7mm rem mag with 160 gr accubonds may be a tad light for moose?
What a great thread.
The guy I bought my .243 from is a long time member and I believe executive member of the bcwf, and he used it with great success for deer, blackies, moose, and elk.
I've seen moose shot with a .270, a .308, and a 7mm mag.
Only difference I noticed was the guy with the 7mm said "what?" alot more during the gutting and packing out.

although ive bin saying the 300wm is the best for moose i use the 7mm in a browning a bolt 8 lb gun kick is managable with that weight and plenty for knocking down the beast

well apparently I am a "jerk" for valuing the magnum cartridge for moose hunting. For passing on my experiences on how extra power can be required for larger animals to make an ethical clean kill. For insisting that the 30-30 has little purpose in modern moose hunting. Well so be it. A jerk I be.

LOL But in all honestly I do not want to be thought as of a jerk, so when I pass one of you guys cutting a trail to your moose that is down 700 yards in deep bush after he ran away wounded from a 30-30 shot....I promise to not be a "jerk" and laugh at you.

my point is that everyone is so fast to crap on me for using a 300winmag and insist their 30-30 is the ideal weapon and they are such better men for using it, and such a better shot, and a better hunter and blah blah blah... I have heard it all. Next thing I will hear is that the 30-30 is okay for Kudu and Buffalo, and Lion.
There is a reason why nobody uses the 30-30 anymore.... a very good reason.
The argument that the 30-30 was used in the past is invalid as well, as there was hardly any other choice.

The ones insisting the 30-30 is so great I would be willing to bet do not use it in the field. They are just argumentative.

You're arguments are patheitic...

No one s**t on you ...(inferiority complex???)

You got all high and mighty and s**t on everyone else there greenhorn..

You'd be better served to lose your "mighty big brute moose slayer who can't be touched" attitude and realize that you aren't the only guy who has ever shot a moose round here.....

I did love how you quickly tried to turn it into an african big game thing...
too funny... ( a little pathetic actually..) ;)

Finally, ... I'll go out on a limb here and say you're about as skilled as a hunter as I think you are,...now will leave what I think out..;)

run along now, drink a big glass milk, and come back with the right attitude there big buddy ;)

you wouldn't make in to where I hunt, with all the weight in ammo you carry to kill a moose..

roast

There are still lots of meat hunters here in Newfoundland. The last bull I shot I left his 19 point plate rack where I panched the animal. My father in-law came up looked at me and said "why in the J***** would you drop the like of that. A nice little last years calf is meat enough for anyone". The only trophy for me is the big old moose roast at Sunday dinner. ;)

you could not have put it better....

If so then I've been doing it wrong. I used 160gr Barnes TSX in my A-Bolt as my moose cannon for a few years. By some accounts the gun should have exploded at the pull of the trigger and the bullet should have bounced right off, but I nailed one at a lasered 286 meters and the bullet punched right though with tremendous terminal performance, dead right there.

edit - not worth it

youre the man sealhunter.

Dude, really? Are you serious? In case you haven't noticed nobody has crapped on you for using whatever the hell you want. On the contrary you have crapped on everyone else in the process of making yourself look like a jerk. And another thing you should look into, .30-30 outsells .300 Win Mag in reloading dies and ammo every year. To say nobody uses them is just uninformed. Your not making any friends, though I could think of a few people you would get along with real well. If you want to contribute to a discussion, you best stick to discussions you have some experiance with. Bed wetting or video games would be somthing I could think of off the top of my head by the sounds of things.

What he said.

I love the 30/30 and it is capable of taking moose at fairly close range. Although with all the options today it certainly would not be my first choice. For me it's a 300WSM, and no I don't need a magnum but wanted something different.

Actually over the years I have known several old time hunters that are still hunting with their 30/30's, from Mule Deer to Black Bear and yes even Moose, and last time I checked their tags and freezers are getting refilled each year with what their 30/30's and of course more importantly what their hard learned skill can do.

Also the first time I met one of these 30/30 hunters I did not criticize but instead asked if he would give me some tips on being half as good with my 30/30 rifle as he was with his, and I can tell you I learned more about hunting in that few hours at the range that afternoon then I have in several years of being in this sport. :)

Having said that my rifle of choice is the one I know I can use effectively because I have spent lots of time at the range and the reloading bench with.

not to take anything away from the old hunters (my dad is 82 and could still outshoot anyone i know) but the stories he tells me and the amout of animals that use to roam (seeing 10 moose in one day)you need to be a much better hunter these days than 40 years ago
