Moose hunting

Actually over the years I have known several old time hunters that are still hunting with their 30/30's, from Mule Deer to Black Bear and yes even Moose, and last time I checked their tags and freezers are getting refilled each year with what their 30/30's and of course more importantly what their hard learned skill can do.

Also the first time I met one of these 30/30 hunters I did not criticize but instead asked if he would give me some tips on being half as good with my 30/30 rifle as he was with his, and I can tell you I learned more about hunting in that few hours at the range that afternoon then I have in several years of being in this sport. :)

Having said this my rifle of choice is the one I know I can use effectively as I have spent lots of time at the range and the reloading bench with it...hint see my sig line. :D

I know what you mean and your point is well taken. On a Deer hunt with my Dad when I was first starting out, we were hunting skid roads to an old sawmill site. Coming around the last turn to the old mill site, we saw three Deer heading up an old sawdust pile. As I was taking my rifle off of my shoulder, he shot the third time. Three shots, three Deer. I asked him how he did that and he said just keep throwing lead 'til it drops. :rolleyes:Ya right. Dad didn't waste shells. I may have been able to 'punch paper' better than him but wasn't the game shot he was.

"not to take anything away from the old hunters (my dad is 82 and could still outshoot anyone i know) but the stories he tells me and the amout of animals that use to roam (seeing 10 moose in one day)you need to be a much better hunter these days than 40 years ago"

a better hunter? or; more cameras, atvs, scents, lures, calls, gps, rangefinder, super laser-beam magnums, etc.

if a noob hunter starts with a rifle chambered in a cartridge that is inexpensive, plentiful and easy to shoot, is it not possible that they will become a "better hunter" by virtue of more time and ammo spent at the range or local "shootin' hole"?

i'd probably recommend a .308, (or 6.5, or 7x57!!!) but around here the 30-30 is still widely used in the moose and deer seasons, and any game that runs away after being hit by them is most likely from a poor shot, not from the "percieved" inadequacies of this old time fave.

i think the older hunters are better shooters (free hand) .i dont think using tecnology makes you cheap. thats like saying a modern military man wih all his tec is not better than an englishman with his musket. ill put muny on the modern warrior.
all that sid personally i want to get into slow stocking with a lever action open sight gun
I was thinking about a 45/70 im shure everyone will say the 30/30
what do you guys think is the best gun for that considering their are alot of bears where i hunt black and grizly

The most I have seen is 12. Several times actually. One time we could look off on the corner of a barren ground and we counted 12 lying down. They were about 2 miles away. The old saying here when someone asks is there any moose on the go is " I had to beat the moose outta the way to kneel down to get a shot"

Ummmm ......ya, just for future reference us mods can see what has been edited if it indeed has been edited and your post wasn't edited.....you fail.:(

Now don't go gettin all mad and leave again like you have this thread twice already and then come back tomorrow and say sorry, it's getting old.

remember you used to buy skippy with a single peanut on the top? Does it still have that?

but to keep from getting off topic, do moose prefer crunchy or smooth. Crunchy for me.

Sorry Mad dog but I miss your point. Would you sooner had me stoop to sealhunters level and take his bait? Or you think maybe the childish banter has gone on long enough?
Did I offend you somehow?
