Moose rifle

I prefer my 300 wsm bolt gun. Plenty of power to reach out across a cut block at dusk, yet the 24" barrel isn't cumbersome when negotiating thickets. I found a few more inches in overall length as per a long action calibre with a 26" barrel a fare bit more awkward. I would think a 22" 308win would also be pretty handy, especially for a road shooter.

I used to hunt with a 7mm mag. Deer would just fall over with one shot. When I hunt moose with that same gun, they would stay standing up for a while. Sometimes I couldn't tell if I hit it or not. I was using federal premium 160 noslers. The bullet would always be recovered against the hide on the opposite side.

Now I use a .338 win mag with federal premium 250 grain nosler partitions. The moose just fall over now. There is a fair exit wound, it's quick, and most importantly the moose falls over where I shot him. They don't have a chance to run into something hard to get out of.

I use factory ammo right now. I plan on handloading in the future, but due to the constant renovations at home( I am a carpenter), time and space don't allow.

I shot a cow moose this past fall with my.338. This is the tastiest animal I have ever taken.:sniper:

To pick one. My Schultz & Larsen, model 65DL in 308 Norma Magnum.

A great combination of power, range and accuracy.

Shot a cow 2 yrs ago with 150gn Hornady interlocks in a .30-06 Double lung, out the other side, 260 yds. She went 50 yds and laid down. Not worried about firepower if I have a .30 under my arm. Dad used his .30-30 for moose and deer. Always came home with a moose. I used a .303Br and this year my wife will use a .303Epps.
Why?? Because you don't need a cannon to get the job done. You need skills and patience.
Johnn, if I were to ever actually own a magnum, it would be the .308 Norma Magnum.

My cal. of choise is one of my 9.3x62 [ got 3] but this fall i shot a large cow broadside with BLR 180 GR 308 280 YARDS COMPLEAT PASS THROUGH DROPPED IN ITS TRACKS IN 2 FEET OF WATER OF COURSE

When I started out in my youth, hunting Moose in the B.C. interior, Dad and I both had Simpon-Sears 'specials' in 303Br. A couple years later when there was a bit more cash available, Dad ordered us a pair of standard Husqvarnas in 30-06. As luck would have it, only one came in. A light weight with very nice wood. Seeing Dad drool, when he asked if I wanted it, I told him to take it and I'd locate something else. A few years back I inherited Dad's '06.

He talked to a gunsmith in town and the guy told him he'd sell me his PH 308NM, if I could handle it. After three shots at the range, I was the proud owner. When I asked why he was selling something that looked that good, He showed me his latest acquisition, a S&L in 308NM. I promised myself, one day I'll have one like that. Now I have it.

I like the '06 and used it on a Mule Deer hunt on draw in AB with my Daughter & Son In Law.

All that being said, for a 30 calibre magnum, the 308NM, especially in a Schultz, will always have a special spot in my gun safe.

Savage 300wm 111 3x9-40. 180gr nosler partition

Mossberg 535ats slug barrel fiber optic front bead with 600gr brenneke 3" gold magnum slugs

Baikal mp221 4570 sxs 2.5-20 bsa compact. Most likely 350gr FN interlock

I don't hunt moose yet but those are the rifles I would take

I'd prefer to use the double tho

Mine's a Remington 7600 in .35 Whelen.

I like the .35s and there's plenty of knockdown power with 225 grain bullets. I may be hunting them with a .50 M/L this year, so my preference may change.

The rule in BC to hunt moose I think is a 175gr bullet that retains 2000flb of energy @ 100meters is the minimum. Or that could be for Bison. I can't really remember. I don't moose hunt yet I'm still a greenhorn hunter but I’m sold on the .300WinMag as a moose hunting rifle. I saw a video on YouTube a guy made a 1km shot across a lake and the moose stopped dead in its tracks.

That requirement is for Bison, not moose.
While I favor the 308 Norma Mag, there are a lot of lesser chamberings that will handle moose with aplomb.
The 30-06 take hundreds each year.
The 308 Winchester is great, as is the 270, 280 and 7x57.
I have shot moose with everything from the 6mm Remington up to the 338 Win Mag.
All the moose died quickly.

By some weird twist of fate, my moose have usually died with .270 and 7mm bullets in them but that is as much about circumstance than planning.

I've never seen anything that would suggest that moose are anything resembleing hard to kill.

i shoot 166sst out of a 30-06. the drop deer and blakc bear in their tracks. some have said i need to bump to 180s for moose. but the 165 are 3/4" grouping.
any advise.

I used a Cooey model 71 in 30-06 for a while. This year I'll be packing a Weatherby S2 Vanguard in 300 Weatherby. It might be alot of gun, but I'm comfortable shooting it. Going to be using 200gr Accubonds, just in case. :)
