My buddies are giving me grief and saying "not enough gun" . I know it is capible as many moose have been harvested.
Using 6.5x55 what is your suggestion for bullet and aiming point?
I won't shoot more than 150 yards where I hunt.

Your buddies obviously don't know #### about moose or the 6.5x55. I would use a quality bullet, aka Nosler Partition or Swift A-Frame, and hold tight behind the shoulder. If you can do that you'll kill every moose you shoot. The 6.5 Swede is popular in Sweden for shooting Moose and while it might not be the greatest 300 yard moose rifle (probably still kill very moose you shoot though) it is perfectly adequate for the task at hand. Not even "on the light side".

I shot a bull in the centre front chest @ about 75 yards with a 140 grain Swift A frame at moderate velocity (about 2600 IIRC) with my Swede. The bullet entered the chest travelled the complete length of the moose ( including a paunch full of browse) and exited just beside his butt hole. Too bad really as I wanted to recover the bullet to see how well it expanded. The moose run about 30 yards and dropped. I now shoot 160 grain round noses @2500 but I have not killed a moose yet to see how that load will perform. I switched because a Gunnutz member sold me about 400 old stock 160 grain CIL component bullets. The swede is more than enough for moose.

Shot many with the 140gr Partiton and 160 Hornady.Ask the Swedes if the 6.5x55 is too light.........you're buddies don't know squat.Harold

Moose is a tod smaller in northern Scandanavia but that doesn't change a thing. Excellent round and rifle for moose, Laplander and Northern Canadian Native approved!

I have shot 3 moose with the 6.5x55 and the 140 Partition @ 2750 fps.
Two were inside 150 yards, the third at 330 yards. All were one-shot kills.
I regard the "Swede" as perfectly adequate for moose. Just place that shot correctly.
Dave.

Dropped one last fall with a 129 NAB LR (but in a 260 rem) at close range, and it worked real real good. You'll be fine with a proper shot and a good bullet.

One of my favourite cartridges, including for moose hunting. Good bullet plus proper placement = meat in freezer.

I've only taken one moose with a Swede , it did what every other Moose I shot with a lot of other calibers did , it went about 30 to 40 yards and fell over . One old friend of mine has hunted exclusively with his 6.5 for over 30 years . He has taken a lot of Moose , Elk and a few very large bears with it . He used to use CIL 160 gr Kling Kores back in the day , but has switched to loading his own with 140 gr Nosler Partitions ........ and he still drops Moose and Elk with it . As others have said , your friends don't know what they're talking about . Take your 6.5 out , you'll be in good company .

Never have recovered a 6.5 bullet in a moose either..........always an exit hole.I remember a old gunrag where the author quoted ," if you want to shoot through two moose and a fire hydrant use the Hornady 160gr".Harold

^ exactly what he said

Get your hands on Norma Ornyx or Lapua Mega ammo, both in the 160 Grain variety. You'll prove your pals wrong and be amazed to boot.

Just for curiosity sake, what do your friends shoot? I'm guessing 300 win mags? Never listen to or trust anyone whos only rifle is a 300wm. They don't know what they're talking about.

I resent that comment about 300 win mags! Haha, just kidding. But it was my first hunting rifle. Now I have also a 308 for me and a 6.5x55 for the wife. But I still use mostly the 300 because it's so much fun to shoot and doesn't hurt at all. Wait, that's not right...it hurts a lot and I kind of hate it.

Elk are a lot harder to kill and my son had no problem wacking two with a 140gr Partition at 200 yards...........moose I always put 1st one in the hump/high shoulder shot and walk up....... one between the lookers......Harold
