Mosin 91/30 vs M38 accuracy?

You will find as much variance between examples of Mosin-Nagant rifles of the same model, as you will across models. There are so many of these around in states from battlefield pick-ups to captured re-furbs to arsenal re-furbs to barely issued. And they've been used for sporting conversions for almost as long as they've been built, so who knows what modifications we're talking about.

Bore and chamber condition, crown damage, and especially stock bedding are going to affect the results more than which model year we're talking about.

On level terms, yes the longer gun has a longer sight radius, and the carbine fireball we all enjoy so much is merely powder wasted in a short barrel; the M91/30 has the potential to be more accurate over longer ranges.

I'd take the M38 deer stalking, provided I proved its ability on the range and sighted it in. But I *have* taken the M91/30 Sniper. You going to use the iron sights?

To answer your question, the Russian 91/30's are more accurate then the carbines. If your hunting in the Bush, then the carbines are a better option, if your hunting in open areas I would go with the 91/30.

We were playing around with my son's 91/30 today to sight it in with the homegrown front sight modifications. Mine shoots about the same. Considering surplus ammo, open sights and aging eyeballs I doubt if more could be expected from a battle rifle made in 1932.

^^^Nothing wrong with that at ALL.

That's some good shooting with a 91/30 and surplus ammo(I'm assuming 100 yds). Do you know what it will do with hunting ammo?

Hunting ammo can be better.... especially if you handled. Sierra Pro Hunter makes good bullets with a good coefficient. I can hit 6" groups at 200 yards with iron sights (well the gong is a 6" gong... so group may be a bit loose but probably accurate). There are some u tube videos of a guy hitting 944yards with surplus ammo

Yes it was 100 yards. The limited shooting that we did with 203? grain soft-points hoping that it would shoot lower (it didn't, printed with the 147 grain surplus) indicates that it would shoot at least one type about as well as the surplus. The chances of either rifle going hunting are pretty much nil, but I get a perverse satisfaction in knowing we could if we had to.

thanks, I think I will keep my M38 and tune it up for a future hunt. I was considering selling it and getting the cheaper 91/30 but the fire balls are just too much fun. Not sure yet if I will be using the iron sights. I am thinking about mounting an SVT 40 muzzle break if it is possible.. Next thread...

I have a couple of M44s, carbines are too much fun. Keep your M38 and buy SOME 91/30s. I finally broke down and got a 1938 91/30 with all matching numbers with laminated stock and couple of months ago. My gun guy called me couple of days ago that they got a new shipment, heading over there again to buy another. Got to stop buying guns.... but how ? Where is Dr. Phil ?
