Mosin Nagant project

Yes it is possible your receiver has a Serbian crown, since the Finns never made their receivers and bought or traded with other countries to obtain receivers.

I guess that make Finnish Mosin Nagants bit's and pieces rifles then. It's a good job they never mounted PU scope mounts on the rifles they made, you would not have a leg to stand on if they had.

Is it all right with you all if i go ahead an put the genuine(but post war) PU mountand scope on my 91/30 Tula . it is laminated . sold by the thousand in Canada .

No it not alright:mad: Hang it on a wall in a darkened room and don't touch it in case you rub off the fingerprints left by the soldiers that once used it. Obliterating the prints destroys it's collector value. If you do have to move it again then handle with great care, don't disturb the spiders that live in the barrel.

But they didn't, did they? And it makes a world of difference if the work was done in a national armory or in a home workshop.
In this day and age, it would be really easy to post a description of a rifle, describe what it is, and what is planned, and whether it is a good idea or not. This is a classic example of a relatively rare rifle that has been lost as a collectible, the customized rifle being worth less than the total value of the unaltered rifle, the parts added, and the labour expended.

So the moral of the story is perhaps it is a good idea to check if the milsurp you have obtained is rare or not. Then you could make an informed decision to modify it or not.

Personally I don't favour modifying (sp?) rare items just for the sake of preserving historical pieces. Not so rare is ok to modify but not sporterize. I too want to put a PU scope setup on my 91/30 - now I'll research it out to make sure it is not some rare piece (most likely not rare) - but just in case. Lesson learned.

Why can't the "I'm getting old and need a scope to see properly" crowd put a "no gunsmith" scout mount and an LER scope on their rare variants?

I was going to do just that with my Mosin until I handled a rifle with a scout scope. They are horrible and worse than useless at anything other than low magnificatrion. In any case it's much more satisfying to do a project that actually involves some metalwork.

I was under the impression that low magnification was the hallmark of a scout scope.

You won't be able to pop feldgrau helmets over at the Red October Tractor Factory,Vasily, but surely you'll hit that whitetail or gong. Just how bad is your eyesight?

I need glasses for reading, for seeing long distances my eyesight is perfect. My eyes became out of focus at short distances about two yrs ago. I can see the front sight on rifles just fine, but the rear sight is out of focus so I can't line up the front sight with the rear without difficulty.

It could have been alot worse, at least it wasn't a Mauser! :D

Many a 1909 Argentine Mausers were gutted for the actions.

I have some beutiful sportingrifles built on argentines, but they were alreayd just actions with sewer bored chopped barrels on them when I got them, so I feel no guilt - lol.

Yeah, I do agree with that, but the rifle that started this topic was an exceedingly uncommon Finnish mosin variant ;) You could argue it was worth saving.

There is a place in Saskatoon that does very nice nickel plating, I'm thinking about having mine done. Seeing that I am going to improve it I might as well go all they way and do it properly. The rifle below is my inspiration, only mine will have a metal flake electric blue stock instead of red, I think it will look unique.
