I've decided to try to get a Mosin Nagant, and I was wondering what would be a better choice: The M1891/30 or the M44 carbine.

Hmm. Kind of like asking, "Should I get a 1985 Suzuki GS1150, or a 1984 Yamaha V-Max".

(Sorry, sometimes my different passions intersect. Next analogy, I'll use vintage chainsaws).

The two Mosins are different, both in historical aspect and in feel when using them at the range. Personally, I'd say get both, they are dirt cheap these days, and you'll be able to pick which one you like better each day you head out to the range.

I like the pre-WW2 (ok, let's say turn of the previous century) engineering of the 91/30, and I also appreciate the "Geez, we don't need them tio be that long, do we?" breakthrough of the M44. Be prepared to use some Rub A535 when shooting the M44 though. (Well sometimes the recoil is said to be somewhat Testosterone-worthy, try it for yourself)

Don't get an M44!!

Once you get one then you want another, and another..... I got the laminate Izzy a couple of months ago; then came a Polish and another one today.... I can't make it stop:D.

I own a 91/30 and an M44. I just brought my M44 out to the range today for the first time and I was definatly impressed with the accuracy at 100 yards, as well as the kick. Ive had my 91/30 for a while, but after today, I like the M44 more. Im sure it would be alot better to pack around all day in the brush as well. it will definatly be a candidate for my deer hunting rifle this year....

M44

Ya, you have to admit; for the price of them; you get alot of 'Bang' for your buck. They range anywhere from $100 for a 'well used' russian to a little over $300 for a 'new' polish one. The polish one's IMHO are really nice rifles; very well finished and accurate too.

I would have picked the Suzuki anyday..
No such THING as an 84 Max :)

my dad has the 91/30 and i have the 44. if you dont mind recoil and are just shooting for fun go with the 44 they are lighter

weight is similiar between the two (after all, the M44 has that big hunk of metal hanging off the end), the 91/30 feels slightly lighter and i think has better balance.

truth be told, i prefer the 30, although i think mine is what is known as a converted dragoon.

Ryan J,

Did you restore your m44's? If so please tell me what you did! That's the look im going for and would like to clean mine up as well.

I wouldn't say I 'restored' any of them; both of the Polish one's were just like new when I got them, the one minus the sling is 'unfired', the ony thing I have done to them was remove the cosmoline with a can of brake clean and give them a little rub down with some gun oil.

The Russian one with the laminate stock was origionally laquered; so I guess you could say I Bubba'd it. The laquer came right off with a fine 3M abrasive pad and some brake clean, I then gave it a coat of linseed oil. I spent about an hour polishing the bolt handle; as it looked like Ivan hade a bit too much vodka the night before he turned it on the lathe or forgot to put a bit in the chuck:p.

Also I just came back from the range today and just thought i'd mention the M44 is not really a summertime t-shirt wearing rifle; its more of a fall/winter heavy sweater/jacket rifle. The metal but plate amplifies the recoil quite abit:p. But they sure are a blast to shoot!

Or you could get an M38 instead of a M44 and not have to carry the bayonet around...Unless you are in bear country of course. :D
