Don't get a carbine if you can stand a bit of recoil.
I've got all three and I prefer the M38 out of them all. Quick handling, light weight, barks like a cannon and spits a massive fireball. 5 dancing bananas out of 5.

I would get the 91/30 you'd probably get better accuracy out of it I have a jungle 303 and going by that the carbine would probably take your shoulder off

Do yourself a favour, obtain and mount a bayonet when shooting. The 91/30 was zeroed with the bayonet mounted. It's just so damn Russian, isn't it? Kudos on your choice. I have Finn capture Remington 1917; blunt instrument. Love it

if you are not interested in a rifle with WWII history, a post war soviet 44 or a polish M44 would be smoother than a M38 (unless you find a 1940 made 38 which was made before the invasion of the USSR).
if you are just looking for a shooter, there is not much to choose from between the 38 and the 44, but if you are looking to carry it around in the bush or in your truck, the 38 is probably the way to go as the bayonet adds weight and bulk to the 44.
Depends what you want it for, Gibbs. A representative of the breed? Then I'd say a 91/30, they've got a nice balance and are more comfortable to shoot for any length of time, although the carbines hold a lot of appeal based on their cuteness. If you want one OOZING with history, a finn capture, particularly U.S. made(Remington or Westinghouse) M91 or any wartime M91/30, M38 or M44 would be good. For pure asthetic and shooting pleasure, a postwar Polish M44 one would be a good bet...

I have a 1938 made 1891/30. I've killed deer and bear with it. I like the accuracy and the lighter recoil than the shorter models.
I had another one that I bought as a barreled reciever, cut to 22 inches, and put in an M44 stock and put a scout scope on.
It barked and bucked harder than the full length 31/30 but it was a little easier to pack around through the bush and did kill bears too.

That's what I bought. There're many reasons for an M44:
1. Postwar production from Russia has chomed barrel and good chance of not being fired once. But M38? Probably forget it.
2. Short and handy. Not much heavier than M38 and SKS, and you still can carry it for bush whacking.
3. Comes with bayo which I like, in case you empty the chamber and the kritter keeps coming at you. Just kidding...but I think it's cool.

In a nice thick winter jacket you're right .... Altough I tend to shoot in a T shirt .... The one time I shot one of these things I gave it back after 5 rounds .... I still bought it because the price was right and it makes a nice backup to the 91/30 ... Just gotta find me a wussy pad ....
