Mosin Nagants=brutal recoil?

My experience is that it is ammo and shooting position dependent. I recall shooting an M44 in t-shirt weather from the standing position with Yugo ball, didn't seem too bad. Another time we had some 91/30 Snipers and were delinking PKM ammo (a little hotter load or heavy ball?) to shoot from a shellscrape (prone), it was brutal.

In my experience, the Mosin kicks a little more than a Lee Enfield. The thin stock doesn't help things. But all in all, as a recoil sensitive person, I am able to shoot the Mosin Nagant (1891/30) without recoil problems. Especially if you use a butt pad or are wearing heavy clothing it is hardly noticible. However with light clothing it is noticible and might hurt. Moreover, prone shooting is definitely painful (but accurate).

The internet has made me think that my m44 was going to tear my arm off at the shoulder but it was not bad at all. I shot it with just a t-shirt and it was no worse than an enfield.

Try a Steyr M95 carbine sometime;) .

Been there, done that in 8mm mauser. Shoots about the same as anything else with a steel buttplate. It didn't bother me, but I have heard from others who've shot it that it kicks hard.

I find the Steyr Carbine has a good kick, and as such a light rifle it has some serious muzzle jump...seriously, the thing feels like a .22 untill you pull the trigger!

Thats so very true.....all's well until you pull the trigger.....still love this little carbine though.

yeah, they are awfully "cute". I'd like to have 3 to put the stacking thingie to use. Readily available ammo would be nice too, but one day I'll cave and buy the dies n stuff...

I'm looking at getting some ammo for my M-44. I'm thinking of getting the Hungarian surplus stuff in either the 148gr ball or maybe the less expensive 174gr heavy ball.
Has anybody been able to compare these two? Would anybody suggest paying a little more for the Igman 150gr soft points?
I'm not sure if I'll hunt with it but would like to know any opinions for various applications.
Thanks!

Back in the day, I blew off 400rd's out of my M44 in ONE day day, and 300rd's in the 8mm Hakim (same day). My four other friends did the same with their M44's......yep, it was good to be a single, young guy, do what you want, when you want...shouldn't have got married.....hmmmm...getting off topic here.....Anyways, yep, M44 has a good kick to it. I use a slip on rubber recoil pad, helps alot. I also like the sights better with the 1" of extra length on the butt end.

I was sighting in my muzzleloader the other day and after i was done that i decided to fire off a few from my m44. picked it out of the case and immediately noticed how light it is, no wonder it kicks, plus that friggin steel recoil plate isnt very soft either.

oh also, someone asked about igman 150gr softpoints. I found them to be quite accurate but mostly i just bought them for the brass to reload.

I've touched off hundreds of rounds out of my M44 and 91/30's, no problem. Recoil was there alright, but it just didn't bother me.
Now my M48, that one makes me second guess about whether I want to shoot or not. Seriously. The closer I get to the break, the more I dread the kick :runaway: . I think its the way the rifle fits me.
I've suffered the snap of magnum loads in light shotguns with a grin. Even pulled the trigger with the gun an inch from the shoulder  (you learn not to do that again, real fast!) Hell, the first center fire I shot was the FNC1 :D (loved it, BTW).
But every time I pull out the M48, I can hear it whispering,
You're my #####!!! :(

(E)
