As much as I like the SVT40, I would favor the Mosin as a relentless work horse with few moving parts, assuming I had to choose one over the other. Having that said, my SVT40 is a tack driver compared to my Mosins.

Where's the "get both" option on the poll???:p

That said, I DO own both, and they'll be going to the range tomorrow.

Both rifles are classic Russian/Soviet workhorses, not pretty, but they'll work and work well. Buy both if you can, but if you can't, my first choice would be the Mosin-Nagant.

Get them both now. Mosin's are drying up. SVT40s are next, followed by Russian SKS. The Yugo SKS are already hard enough to find here.

Westrifle has been quoted that carbine Mosin's in the next batch will be in the $500 range.

I prefer the Mosin for actual shooting. I reload and the Mosin means I don;t chase brass into the tall stuff. Also, my Mosin "shooter" is a molot-refurb PU sniper which is a more predictable performer than any SVT I have yet owned.

Although I love all my Mosins (Especially my M38), the SVT gets chosen more often for range trips as it's just so much fun to shoot. It's also more of a burden to clean, but I enjoy doing it!

And most people would answer Mosin, SVT40, both or neither to such a question, depending on their personal tastes. Maybe people think neither is a deal. Maybe they think they both are but are not comparable given one is a semi, and one is a bolt and thus are apples and oranges.

And seeing as it is a "discussion" board, you may very well get all four votes. I didn't vote, as I'm in the "both" category personally. I love my Mosins, and my SVT40s. Both are a great deal.

Hmmm.... as an investment I would pick the svt40 (seeing what they are selling for in the states) , as for plain ol' shooting fun it is the mosin.... I only have one svt, but I seem to keep bringing home mosins......

SVT40 I'd say. Someday they both won't be as plentiful to come by, but there are far more Mosins than SVT40s, so should you ever decide to get both later on it should be easier to track down a Mosin Nagant. Assuming that's what you care about.

I gave up chasing brass into the tall stuff after I saw the state of the cases. Those SVT-40 chambers really make a mess of the brass.
