Mossberg 590-A1 vs Remington Versa Max Tactical, care to chime in?

So, would there be a mag capacity advantage here in Canada to buying something like the Versamax Sportsman with it's 3.5" chambering instead of a 3" Versamax?

Yes and no.

Some people interpret the law as, it doesn't matter what the barrel is stamped for. If it's chambered for 3.5", they put on an extension to fit 5.9 - 3.5" shells even if the VMT is stamped for 3" shells. I am a chicken so I stuck to 5.9 - 3" shell capacity. If I wanted the extra shell capacity, I would buy a 26" barrel and an unplugged extension to go on my VMT.

But isn't the VMT only chambered (and the barrel stamped) for 3"?

The other consideration (at least for me) is that the VMS is $320+HST less than the VMT

The VMT is stamped for 3" but accepts 3.5", what extension you add it up to you.

Phone around for VMT prices but I would start with Casey if you plan on getting mods, saves you shipping it to him. If you want to start with a VMS, it would cost you more to get it to the VMT specs.

So the VMT will chamber and fire a 3.5" shell? Why would it be stamped 3"?

Do a search on this forum and there is lots of discussion on the VMT stamp.

I believe they found that some lower quality 3.5" shells would deform under recoil when fully loaded into an extended magazine. So instead of dealing with all the pending complaints, they stamped it for 3".

Just a thought but i wonder if it might stave off any potential hassles if you had 3.5" added to the stampings on the barrel....or maybe "chambered for 3.5" cart." engraved on the receiver?

Not sure what the legalities of that would be, sounds like a lot of hassle for one round. If I decided to compete and that one round was going to be a difference maker, I'd just buy a 26" barrel.

If you're serious about that extra round just start with Sportsman and have that modded.

I have both a 590a1 and tac ord tuned versa max. For a first shotty get the 590. Tons of fun and super reliable. It isnt fancy so you dont mind tossing it around in the truck and generally abusing it. The versamax is sure a sweet rig. Super smooth and fast but youwill be close to $1800 all in once tac ord does their work. If you get a versamaxgo with the sportsman and chop it to lenght. 3.5 in chamber allows 9 shells loaded with 2.75.

I have a Beretta 1301 and a 590A1 and whats a little strange is that when we're out banging plates... runnin & gunnin we all like the auto better....

BUT and this is a big BUT....

We make more hits and run better times with the 590A1

We think racking the slide slows us down just enough to stay in cadence with the cycle.

With the auto, we tend to shoot before we are really back on target.... and then miss.

I suppose if we shot more with just the auto, we'd get better at it in time. Sometimes less is more though.

Does anyone know how many 2.75" shells fit in the magazine tube of the Versa Max Tactical?

as it comes to canada the importer err'ed on the side of caution and crimped the magazine tube to hold 5x 2.75" shells..... legally since the gun is built on a 3.5" reciever you can have 5.9x 3.5" shells, which equals 7x 2.75" shells..... add one in the chamber, one ghost loaded and your gun carries 9 rounds of 2.75" total

you can use a die grinder to remove the crimping from the factory tube, and the replug it to proper size.... or order a new nordic extension from casey at tactical ordanence..... he sells the +3 extension that will be one round shorter then the factory +4 but it will not require any tuning after since the +3 is the perfect legal size.

casey also has steel +3 extensions if aluminium is not your thing as well

Thanks. I don't want to put an extension on as the mag tube is already flush with the barrel on the Tactical. I will talk to Casey at TacOrd when the time comes to figure out my options.

I think the Tactical version is only stamped for 3" shells not 3.5". Maybe someone can confirm. If it is the case though, I would be wary of altering the capacity based on 3.5" shells. I am sure Casey will know the legalities of it.

+1
The Tactical is stamped 3 inch. The plus 3 extension is good on the sportsman because of the 3 1/2 stamping, not the Tactical.

so ex-plain to me why remington says the receiver is 3.5" and will accept all 3.5" accesory barrels..... the barrel marking means nothing, it is not a firearm, the reciever is.
