Mossberg 590-A1 vs Remington Versa Max Tactical, care to chime in?

so ex-plain to me why remington says the receiver is 3.5" and will accept all 3.5" accesory barrels..... the barrel marking means nothing, it is not a firearm, the reciever is.

I don't believe Remington will officially say the VMT is designed for 3.5" even though they will fit and fire. If you are willing to argue your point in court, go right ahead. Personally, I decided that the 1 round isn't worth me losing any sleep so I went with 5.9 - 3" shell capacity.

Well, doesn't look like the Christmas bonus is going to be enough to spring for the Versa Max. Can't really add any additional funds as i spent it all on the AR, so it looks like it will be the 590-A1 for now with just the stock furniture. A semi-auto would have been nice but I suppose a pump will do just fine. Not like I expect to be winning any comps anytime soon. Plus, reloading will be a lot easier without having to spend a bunch of money to make it more user friendly. I'm going to have Casey thread it for chokes. Is there anything else that I want to have done while it's there?

Ergo makes a Key Mod handguard for the 590 - slim, non-biting and modular, I really wish they'd brought one out for the 870 - but they're running under a couple of hundred bucks, so maybe I'll wait.

Upgrade the follower and put on an oversized safety and you are set. I personally like the SJ stuff but Casey may have other options.

my prefered 590 is actually the 18.5" model for the simple reason you can use any of the hunting barrels on it..... i upgrade it with a +1 magazine extension, new s&j follower, the big arrow type extended safety.... and of course it already has the ghost ring sights, add a velcro style side saddle and your good to go.

the versatility of the 18.5 vs the 20" 590 is nice to have.

What is the purpose of upgrading the follower?

What hunting barrels? I was under the impression that you couldn't swap barrels on the 590, at least not easily.

the 18.5" 590a1 uses the same ring spacing as the model 500 hunting shotguns.... so if you want to change out to a bird barrel you can, the 20" uses a ring space that is only for the 20" 9 shot models. notice difference in pictures below how the barrel ring is at muzzle for 20", and in normal position on the 18.5"

once you put a +1 magazine extension on the the 18.5 your not losing anything to the 20" model ( 1 round).... plus on the 18.5" model if you want to run a surefire forend with light the bayonet is already deleted off the 18.5

Have you actually swapped barrels on yours? The way I understand it the 590 uses a different barrel mounting method than the 500. Swapping barrels is technically not possible.
