Mossberg 930 JM Pro shell stop issues

The warranty center fellow at Grech Outdoors was very helpful HOWEVER there appears to be a big dispute between Mossberg and IRG that is preventing warranty centers from satisfying parts requests. This stems from IRG bringing in the JM Pro and what modifications they made to it apparently has been causing problems. He said he dealt with a few people who have the exact issue as mine and none of them are getting satisfied right now until the dispute is settled. I couldn't even buy it from them or any other warranty center. The dispute may be settled or it may not.

Obviously, this is not a good situation and I'm less than pleased.

Also he said to go ahead and cut the spring. I was wondering about this since it is super tight and was made for a larger capacity magazine.

Not sure if he ever says it out right but you can see the hole for it when he talks about "pivot for the shell release" at 3:02.

Anyway I may have gotten some good news about getting the part but I don't want to jinx it until I know for sure.

Hooray. Wortner Gun Works, one of the other warranty centers, was able to send me a package in the mail. I'll have to go home to start work on it. Could be a very happy weekend for me.

Good to hear ya managed to get the part. That would suck having to wait for the dispute to be settled or for IRG to jump in and assist. That's THE major issue I have with dealing with IRG. They have nice prices on some things but the lack of communication is the killer.

My saga unfortunately is continuing.

I lost my cotter pin. Unbelievable. I was putting it back together and when I tested it I thought it was still busted -- but I had just replaced the broken pin! I broke it down again and somehow the cotter pin had gone missing. ARGHHHHHHHHH.

Past two evenings I cleaned my floor meticulously and used a flashlight and magnet hoping to find it. FRACKFRACKFRACKFRACKFRACKFRACKFRACKFRACKFRACKFRACKFRACK

That bites. I've got a big magnet for lost bits but I've still lost count of the number of small parts that have disappeared over the years.

So on the advice of a friend I went to a craft store Michaels to look for material I could use to fashion a cotter pin. I found three likely things in the jewelry section and took them home. It took some experimentation and a lot of patience but I managed to make something that seems to be sticking.

I got what is called an eyepin, made out of iron. They come in hundreds of units. It's used for beadwork. It fits in the slot where the cotter pin is. I tried three times to try to get it to jam the retainer and finally I put the eyepin in first, jammed the retainer into the hole to fix the stop assembly, and then wrapped/bent the eyepin around the retainer pin. I used needlenose pliers to make sure no part of the pin protruded.

Haven't tested it yet except by racking a full mag of shells through it a dozen times. The eyepin remains in there. I'll take it back to the range later this week and see if it breaks.

Also I cut about four inches from the magazine spring. Easier to load now.

^^ A piece of duck tape over the bottom of the hole will hold the pin in place as well. That's what I did while I was waiting for my replacement retaining clip. Worked perfect. FYI

LOL so I was cleaning my place for a third time (in expectation of a visit from a lady friend) and guess what. I found the cotter pin. Instead of on the floor it had bounced up onto the lower shelf of my coffee table.

However I was too lazy to install it and was curious to see if my "Michael's" solution would work so I took the Mossberg to the range and pumped about 50 shells through it. Light target loads. Worked as fine as when I had the cotter in.

So I'm going to keep my kludged solution and shoot it at a match this Sunday.

EDIT: false alarm. Those little bits weren't the shell stop pivot pin..

but WHERE DID THEY COME FROM???

I stripped it and looked and looked.. seems okay.. cut another couple inches from the spring...

tomorrow will try at a match but I'll have backup

....so this is going to go back to Irunguns.

It lasted a stage which ended with a shell not coming out. The spring bound inside and at the next stage I didn't realize it still had two in the magazine that didn't pop out because of that problem. If it hadn't been a friendly match I would have DQed for sure. My fault that part for not recognizing that (and me being new to the semis) but I just had had enough. Fortunately I had a pump backup (590A1) which operated flawlessly.

When the day was over another competitor had a look at it after I stripped it down and was not impressed by the magazine work done to plug it to make it legal. Said the poor plug work would make the forces too intense on the shell stop which would have caused the earlier problems I related. Said a good smith or some more perseverence would eventually make it a good gun. This echoed what I had heard from one of the Mossberg warranty guys.

On top of that, in chatting about it with others at the same match, another former JM Pro owner said he had exactly the same problems and had sent it back long ago.

I'm too demoralized by this to spend any more time on a lemon gun. Really too many compounding problems. It's going back.

So.. Versamax? Bite the bullet and save up for an M2?

Your first and only problem is it a junkberg, I'm hostly surprised the safety or extractor didn't break first. I replaced a extractor twice for the same guy in the same season in the same gun along with his safety and another friends safety. Versamax is a wicked gun and so is the M2 but the Versamax is so much nicer to shoot, 3" duck loads feel like your shooting cheap shot pretty much no kick and extremely reliable. M2 is light reliable and points nice but it'll give ya a boot.
