So I have been looking for a shotgun to replace my old 70's Wingmaster for a while now, and I think I may want a semi. I had never considered a semi before as I thought they pretty much started at $1000 for anything semi decent. But just recently I started reading about the Mossberg 930, and it seems to be getting pretty stellar reviews. I am considering the 930 Waterfowl/Deer combo. It will mostly be used as a range gun for clays for the time being, but I am looking at getting into deer and possibly some waterfowl hunting in the near future (already have my license, just no opportunities as of yet).

I don't think I could justify spending much more than the price of the 930 combo on a shotgun. Perhaps if I really got into shotgunning/hunting later on, but for now I would like to keep it affordable and fun. So it's pretty much either this combo, or a pump combo. I am pretty sure I want a semi.... they seem like they would be a lot of fun for clay shooting at my club, and I like that the gas models dissipate some of the recoil. The rifled slug barrel would be really nice too... that way I wouldn't have to worry about having to buy a deer gun, and the deer hunting around here is shotgun and muzzleloaders only anyways.

Are you 930 owners happy with your gun? Do you have any complaints, or problems cycling the cheap bulk pack target loads?

Thanks!

I have a 930 and I love it. I did alot of my reasearch on a mossberg section of another shotgun site, and pretty much everybody had praise for it. The gun is really simple to strip down, and there's no o-rings to deal with. If you're wanting to shoot 2 3/4 loads though, go for the 930. Even on the mossberg site they say the 935 isn't designed to handle the lighter 2 3/4 loads. I've have probably 1000 rounds in it so far (I've only had it a month or so), and I've had maybe 1 or 2 fte, but that was during the breakin period. It's shot everything from 7/8 oz trap loads, to 3" magnum shells, and slugs without a problem. The recoil is very manageable on this gun as well.

Thanks for the post jpicks! I am pretty psyched to finally have an affordable semi, especially one with the reputation that the 930 has!

I have the 930 combo

I've had it just over a year and used it on deer, waterfowl, and turkey

Only had 1 jam, and that was because I blew 200 rounds through it, then spent a week in the bush, by the end of the week it had mud and crap in it

now i just make sure to keep it clean, never an issue since

You can get the synthetic version on Cabelas.ca for $525. Nobody anywhere has a wood version in stock (from what I could find). Mossberg is backordered something like 150,000 units due to everybody buying up stuff after the election in the states. However, I really like the synthetic stock. It comes with shims to adjust the drop and rise of the stock which is really nice (only available on the synthetic), and on my gun atleast, everything fits together REALLY nicely.

ive had my 930 goin on my second year now. i shoot roughly 3-400 rounds/month through it. mostly those 100rnd value packs. the only problem i have ever had so far was last winter when i first bought it. it was -25ish degrees. and it decided it didnt want 2 cycle. not a big deal but annoying. now this was due to the fact that when i bought the thing i shot it straight out of the box, didnt clean it first, didnt properly lube it. here in Estevan mossbergs have a bad reputation for being cheap and unreliable. so i decided it was my 'mission' as it were to prove em all wrong :p as far as maintanence goes- i clean the bore and i give the action a quick cleaning. thats it ive never fully disassembled the weapon to give a good thorough cleaning. so far this weapon has outlived and outperformed 2 benellis, and an extrema2(which was doomed straight from the box btw:confused:) with the same maintenance regime. i love my mossbergs, and no one can convince me otherwise.

Its not a weapon, it is a shotgun. It isn't used for war therefore it is not a weapon. Liberals hate weapons. A sword is a weapon a gun and a knife are tools.

I'm not quite sure what you were getting at with that post...

As for not being a weapon, a shotgun most definately can be considered one (as well as being considered a tool when used for a practical use). Shotguns were used almost exclusively for trench warfare in WWI, close combat in WW2 and Vietnam, and were/are still used for urban warfare in Baghdad, Iraq, and Afghanistan to name a few.
