Is this gun worth buying? I need a cheapo shotgun.

I've got a maveric, and I am hard on it. It's been submerged in mud (not intentionally) and burried in sand and jumped on (intentionally) just a couple racks of the slide while under somewhat clean water and she was good to go although a little gritty.

She gets slung over my shoulder or strapped to the rack while atv'ing and I don't have to shed any tears when it gets dirty, wet or scatched. It got at least 500-600 target shells and 3-400 or maybe more slugs through it and never ever one issue. For it's price not only is it worth buying, I don't think it can be beat.

I'm buying one, they are essentially a Mossberg 500 with cross bolt safety and assembled with some Mexican parts. Most of the reports are that they are very stout guns, a lot of the Mossberg 500 parts are interchangeable as well.

I plan on getting a Maverick 88 security 7+1, seems like good value for the money ($~270) and a cheap way to get into shotguns.

The gun in the picture is a Mossberg 500. It has a tang safety and the 88 has a cross block safety. I just got one in the mail tonight, and after ripping it apart and looking at it, I have no complaints. We'll see how it holds up after next year. :)

When you do get it break it down. Take some light sandpaper and polish all the stamped parts (action bars, lifter etc.). It will make smooth as glass.

Just picked mine up today from Scot at cedar valley hunting. Action is pretty smooth, safety is a bit stiff (as others have complained) and there is a BIT of wiggle in the slide, but I think that's a trait that all mossberg 500's share.

Overall very happy with mine so far :)

Maverick Review

I owned a Maverick for about 10 years, it only fired about 50 rounds (possibly less) and the front slide had become so loose and sloppy that it would not fire unless you remembered to apply constant forward pressure on the front stock.
Maybe this would have been a cheap problem to fix, but I decided to get a 12 1/2" Dominion Arms Grizzly instead. I traded the Maverick to my brother-in-law, I don't think he has bothered to get it fixed yet. IIRC I only paid about $189 for it from Lever Arms , I guess you get what you pay for.
Cheers
Mark

I am not a maverick fan, I find it to have a bit of a rough finish, how ever it will do in a pinch but I would go with a mossberg, ( and I have owned a few) very smooth action, great shotgun for a left hander too!! Also check out a stevens if you are right handed might be the way to go......

...........just my 2 cents worth..........

The single bars were junk. Like I said above I don't baby mine at all and it's flawless. A few of my friends also have the maveric and love them also. None of us baby out stuff.
One of my friends just bought his brother one for his birthday, he commented that it is smoother and tighter than his own new remmington.

I love the cross bolt safety, it's easy and natural to function when seconds count, I find the safety on top requres some awkward manipulation

And lighter. Both the Remington and the Winchester are considerably heavier. I really like how nice and light these guns are, and yes that is important if your carrying it all day long. I was hoping to get mine out to the range yesterday for some test firing but just didn't have the time. But I have looked over this gun alot now, I really like it. So much so I think I'll pick up another.
