just depends what you plan to do with it.
Few things to know
Are you goign to leave it stock.
Planing to put a light on it.
aftermarker stocks, rubber, ar15 style.
Are you left handed.
Is weight and issue.
Is price an issue.
18-20inch bbl or 14"

post some more needs and wants and some of us hear should be able to give some advice.

time for a test drive. either gun shop or range, they have different controls and similar aftermarket support (more so for rem) all the mossberg owners are going to tell you to buy a mossberg, and all the remington owners are going to tell you to buy a remington. The best thing you can do to decide is to handle each, try out the controls, shoulder and point it (safely) and decide which you prefer. You can change most anything about it to suit your needs and if you decide its not for you then you can sell it and try something else. I think both are great shotguns and honestly couldnt pick between the 2. its all up to you man

They are both great manufacturers, I prefer Mossberg, take a look at the 590, if you don't want to spend as much, you can even go with the 500 or if need be the Maverick 88.

I have owned both in the past. The 870 is a bit heavier which helps to soak up the recoil better. I found the 500 a little easier to load. The 870 had trouble with Winchester ammo (shells would stick in the chamber after firing - although it shot everything else just fine) The 500 shot everything I put in it with no trouble at all. The safety and pump release levers are in different locations, but seemed to work well regardless.

Hope this helps.

Most people are happy with either, chances are you will be too! the devil is in the details of exactly which mossberg or remington you select! comparing a mossberg 590A1SPX to an 870 express is like apples vs. oranges same could be said for an 870police vs. a mossberg 500.

In my subjective opinion (I have an 870 and a 590) the mossbergs controls (safety and slide release) are better located. But other people will tel you exactly the opposite...

As someone mentioned earlier the best thing to do is handle/shoulder both and see what seems comfortable.

The things i will mostly use this gun for are alittle target shooting, mostly taking out in the bush on the quad for alittle of protection and fun:cheers:. i think i will keep it mostly stock. i would like to put a side saddle on for sure and if doesnt have pistol grip i would like to put that on also. The barrel doesnt matter too much 18.5 or 20. I would like a slug barrel and smooth barrel too but if i cant thats ok.

My choices are leaning toward the 590A1 SPX, the remington marine magnum and the mossberg 500 JIC marine????? Or eventually maybe own 2 who knows. One fine piece of machinery at a time.

Thanks for the help.

Funny, my take is, as muscles says, just the opposite. The Mossy safety on top of the tang slows you down, as you cannot have a proper shooting grip on the gun and still release the safety. So, getting from "Ready" to "Bang" is slower with a Mossy. Not much slower, but it takes extra concentration, which distracts form watching the target and judging when "Bang" is on.

The Mossy is easier to administer, though. Keeping it fed is as easy as the Remmy, and changing loads with a Mossy is as simple as opening, tilting, inserting chosen load, and closing. Remmy always seems to need a bit of help in getting your previous choice clear of the elevator, to make room for your latest choice.

A lefty can change the Remington safety, as long s the gun is s dedicated, one user only, never handled by anyone else, personal shooter. Changing the safety on a gun which might be used by another member of your party is just asking for trouble, (unless two lefties hang together!)

Dont hesitate on the 590A1spx! Great peice, built like a tank and I cant say enough about the LPA sights. It is a heavy sucker tho, i woudnt care to lug it too far up the mountain. I cant really recomend a pistol grip on a mossberg as the safety is not located very well for that... If you are deadset on a PG setup then a remmy is likely a better choice. Perhaps a hogue overmoulded/bantam stock for the 590A1. The remmy 870 is somewhat easier to completely dissasemble.

As has been demonstrated the safety location is subject to debate. I maintain that the mossy has a better slide release location... I prefer the safety because i can see it without canting the gun to one side... Others like the remmy because they can manipulate the safety without taking moving their finger from the trigger gaurd and practice enough to be comfortable using the remmy safety without eyeballing it.

I havent handled a remington marine magnum but i bet it is excellent. I wouldnt bother with a JIC, as a pistol grip only basic mossy 500 is not to my liking.

As always this is just my $0.02, many people here with more credible opinions than mine.

I might also add that if you get a 590A1SPX, avoid the mesa 8 shot side saddle and go with the 6 shot. The 8 shot interferes with firing from your left shoulder (it will hurt your left hand properly.)

if your intrested in a pistol grip on any kind i would go with the remington.
allso larger slection of things like slyb bbls and sides saddles.
Not that you cant get them for the mossberg just more stuff fro the remington

It's up to you, make sure you handle both and see which gun seems more intuitive to you with regards to safety and slide release.

My brother loves his 500 Mossy and I'm an 870 man. I have no problems with the tang safety but the mossberg slide release just seems a lot more like a PITA to operate then the 870's.

BBB has a good point about getting the Remmy if you want a pistol grip.

Thank you very much for the advice. I guess now all i have to do is go to the store try out what fits better to my liking.

And blondes or brunettes im not prejudice :D

i just bought a mossberg 500 persuader from cabellas before the new year, nice shotgun indeed, i was kinda in the same boat as you though, deciding on either the mossberg 500 or rem 870, i went with the 500 for a price factor, i handled both and the only difference to me was the 870 was a pita to load..... which im sure after a few boxes you would be used to it, the tactical 870 would have cost me another 160$ or so.... i kinda wish i spent the extra money on the 870 now tho..... just seemed like a better quality firearm...i believe the mossberg 500 mariner at cabellas comes with both a pg and a normal stock for 479$..... imo pg's arent very practical, they are fun as hell to shoot tho, but i had terrible aim with mine and went back to a regular stock and dont think i would buy another pg, unless it was for "looks"..

"...would like a slug barrel and smooth barrel too..." Both manufacturers sell combo's that come with a rifled barrel and a smooth bore. The Remington 2 barrel combo is more expensive. $502.50. A Mossberg 3 barrel combo runs $493.75 from Epp's.
Mind you, the Mossberg does have the safety on top. The 870 doesn't. Little bit easier to use.
It's really a Chevy vs Ford thing. Buy either one based on the price. Like supernova says, go fondle 'em both.
"...doesnt have pistol grip I would like to..." Not just a pistol grip. A shotgun with no stock is the most useless thing on Earth. A pistol gripped stock isn't though.

It took me cases worth of ammo plus regularly practicing at home with dummy rounds before I could load the 870 quickly and effortlessly. That lifter is such an impediment, especially on the more heavily sprung 'P' models.

The Mossberg's easier loading, lesser weight and somewhat more positive extraction and ejection get a thumbs up from me but the sloppy feel and cheapish touches throughout were deal killers for me.

Interesting topic, as I asked the same question to myself. I bought a 870 and after owning it for a few weeks, sold it. The Mossberg 500 seems a lot nicer to me, and I am currently looking for one.
