Mossberg Tactical .22

I purchased one today from Cabelas but before doing so wanted to inquire with Mossberg whether it will be producing a 25 or 30 round magazine for this rifle. Here is the response I received...

A 25 round magazine is presently in development for these rifles. Tentatively we are looking at about 1-2 months for these to hit the market considering everything in development clears.

The Tactical .22 has been a hot item for us and suggest getting one while they are widely available, we expect sales to ramp up on these drastically with the holidays coming up.

Thank you,

didnt know that sorta skipped some pages on my way from page 1 my mistake and ya I will try giving them a call, worst they can say is no

Oh man! I want to order one but really want to see a review... half the price of the SR-22 I really want, (Less when you consider the price of adding rails to the SR), but not worth half if it sucks.

mine is on the way, complete with tasco red dot. Girl on the other end of the phone was pretty sure that "holiday" discount code didn't apply to firearms, I pushed a little, she checked with a manager and yup, it applies. Can't wait for it to show.

Cant wait mine shipped today so hopefully Friday, but Im expecting more Monday which I hope not cuz I dont wanna drive back up from out of town to get it

Received mine this evening. I only ordered it from Cabela's Friday morning, received it tuesday so I'm impressed with their quick service.

First note, the hand guard makes the gun look pretty long, but it is actually only about 2 inches longer than an M4. Here's a pic with my norc for comparison

Speaking of the handguard, mine is a little loose at the receiver end, so I'm going to have to try to tighten it up
Next thing i noticed, the buttstock is made by ATI, and appears to be standard commercial spec. As a test I swapped it with the norc and they fit fine.

Also, the scope mount is Made by TAPCO and is a see through style, so you can still use the iron sights. As for mags, it only came with one. I picked up a spare at P&D for $17. I plan on going to the range tomorrow to try it out, i'll report back with the results.

Jay,

From a hands-on examination of the rifle, do you think you could take the handguards off, install a set of carbine guards and move the front sight base back? Assuming you can get the barrel off to have it threaded, you could add a flash hider, and it could dang near pass for a M4!

I want.

I just took the hand guard off. It is molded in two halfs(left &right) and is held together by 6 screws. Unfortunately, the front site post is molded integrally into the hand guard. So to change the handguard, you'd have to replace the front post as well.

For those of you who want to know what this baby looks like without its clothes on....

Had to take it down to see what the issue was with the bolt release. Not very smooth action at all. Guess I need to take it all the way down and clean it up some.

Look familiar....

First impressions....

Well, it’s worth the $260 or whatever it was I paid for it....but no more than that. The Mossberg 702 "Plinkster" workings themselves pale in comparison to my Ruger as far as fit and finish and smooth operation. Pulling back the charge handle on this thing (once I was finally able to free it up) literally feels like their sand inside it. And the handlle itself flops around loose as a goose. Not overly impressed at all. And that lock back mechanism is a joke. It’ll probably be the first thing to break when this thing gets a little mileage on it. The magazine fits like rubish as well. Scratches and grinds its way into the reciever both on the way in and out. Like I said...maybe after a good clean up, it'll function better, but as it sits...without having put a single round through it, I'm giving it about a 5/10 for initial quality.

As for the rest. Pretty a much a cheap plastic shell that was built around the old 702. It could have (and probably was) made in some Brazilian toy factory. Accurate looking from a distance, but a close look reveals just how cheaply this thing is made. Casting marks and imperfections all over the place. Again...pales in comparison to my SR-22.

Already I regret being so impulsive with my buy and I haven’t even shot this thing yet…but oh well….live and learn. I had high hopes for this gun, considering how well their shotguns are made, but you do literally get what you pay for with this rifle.

Hopefully gearbanger is right and a good cleaning and oiling gets it cleaned up and working, if not it will be one of those things I take a lose on and see to someone else

It sucks to say but I am kinda glad that the overall rifle pales in comparison to the ruger after all I payed almost twice as much for my SR22, and I must say it is an awesome and accurate rifle. Well worth the $500 I paid for it from one of our sponsors.
