I need some input of A new semi gun I would like to buy. I need to get A new varmint gun something in A .223 22-250 or 243. I would like to get A auto-loader for A change. Just wondering what you guys think I would be prepared to have some gun something done to a stock rifle of course. Looking to spend up to $1000 for the rifle and a few hundred on gun something. Looking for something that would shoot about 1.25" groups at 100 yards or better. Thanks Andrew

It is not in your price range, but the Swiss Arms Sniper is the most accurate out of the box.

Yes I would like A Springfield Armory rifle but in my area we can't use over a .270 for varmint hunting. So that puts out the M305 and the M14 rifle :( . I found and just bought A Ruger mini 14 in .223 but its not the target one. I am interested to see how it shoots and maybe have some work done to it at Tactical Ordnance if Casy can work on it. As for a scope I have a leupold VX-II 3-9X40 kicking around that I think will work nice.

Well put it this way. There was about 5 of them that ever made into Canada. no more will be made. When they were new they were running around $5500, and that was when the regular ones were 2500-2800.

The regular Swiss Arms are no slouches however. They do not leave the factory untill they shoot 24 shots at 0.8 MOA. (300m, 24 inside a 11cm group w/swiss match). I have not been able to replicate it with my handloads yet (1.14 MOA so far for 5 shots), but the barrels are very well made, and I think it is capable with the right bullet powder combination.

Then get yourself a M305 (yes I'm a Springfield Guy recommending a Chinese gun), get a new match quality barrel for .243Win or 260Rem, find yourself a USGI bolt, and get a gunsmith who knows M14/M1A rifles, or read up on the conversion yourself and have a blast. :)

A little more pricey then a stock M305 but it will work just as well as a National Match from SAI and its a little cheaper in a caliber legal for varmint hunting in South Southern Ontario. ;)

I have seen reports on the net from American shooters converting their M1A's into the 243 so I know it can be done. A little digging on Google should bring you up to speed on it.

A lot of the Browning Semi's will put 3 shoots into 1.25" at 100 yds, not sure what can be done to improve them if they don't though other than trying to find a load of specific ammo it likes.

I have a couple of them, one with the steel receiver (308 win) and a new style Short Trac Stalker (300 WSM). Both will shoot 1.25" groups on a average day. Had another in 308 win with Steel Receiver and it was more like a 2" - 2.5" gun, but I never spent much time trying different ammo.

One of the new Shorttrac's in 243 Win only weighs about 6lbs 10oz and has the drop hinge with detachable mag which is nice if you are moving from stand to stand in a vehicle. They also come in a synthetic Camo stock but those are a little above your limit.

that was my rifle, I shot .5 MOA with 77grain Federal factory loaded SMK. Last one I saw that sold was a few years ago on the EE for $7800, I was told the shooting edge had and sold 10, that's all there are in canada.
