Most accurate out-of-box Precision rifle

Both Remmy and TC Icon use the 5R system, it give above average accuracy and it is virtually maintenance free for copper fouling, a great desing... JP.

Any chance you could do a separate thread comparing your TRGs and TCs with pics of rifles and groups. I think it would make for very interesting reading. Its different to hear someone admit their cheaper guns shoot better than their expensive guns.

Back on topic. :)

My savage Mod 10 in .223 was shooting 1/2 MOA or a bit less at 100 yards out of the box. 1:9 twist 24 " barrel, with 77gr Sierra Match Kings. Good right out to 800 m, when the wind and distance is starting to make it much more challenging for the low BC bullets and me of course. I did hit a 1000 meter gong, but it was ugly. I know the OP wanted .308, but the .223 is a nice (cheaper ammo) platform to start with and work on getting good shots. Then you can do what we all do, and start swapping, trading, etc for the next rifle, and the next , and so on...

I love shooting.

The TC Icon is not a cheap it is and expensive gun if you look at the feature sell at a lower price to get noticed and do they get noticed at our range it is all peoples talk about ,the new kid on the block, The Icon Warlord, Precision Hunter and the Wheatershield are just starting to ge notice, i predict that desing 5R will rule the shooting world somethime in a near future, the gourou out there are starting to notice... JP.

Maybe I shouldn't post this as I don't have any experience shooting a rifle with 5-R rifling but the concept did interest me and I thought of getting a custom Krieger barrel with 5-R for one of my savages....I don't know, is it better or is it just hype. This is what I found on the Krieger site.

The Obermeyer 5-R™ style rifling is simply a different style of rifling that has a more 'ramped', or angled transition from the groove to the land and back down from the land to the next groove. Our conventional 4 groove rifling has nearly parallel sides to the groove. The internet is full of information describing perceived benefits to the 5-R™ rifling over conventional styles, but most of this is comparing "apples to oranges" as they are usually comparing one manufacturer's "non 5-R™" to a different manufacturer's "5-R™" barrels. We have honestly seen no significant differences between the two styles of rifling when comparing our barrels.

Thank you, Krieger Barrels

Ok i wont argue with them but here i've been shooting my Trg-22 both of them for year, great group .250... 200 metres groups... Now come this TC Icon Precision Hunter that i have heard about and this rifle with my same proven TRG load just shot on par with them, the story make that i buy a TC Icon Warlord 308 and with half hour tweaking on my proven load.... give .185 group at 200 metres and again and again... ok this is a 3000.00 rifle and nobody no nothing about them, i got 5 now and i intend to buy a lot more, they are just outstanding... Cheers. JP.

There is no accuracy advantage to rifling styles, numbers of lands, shapes of lands.

if there were, that would be all we use.

And in case you are thinking 5R is new, not by a long shot. Rifling designs, numbers, groove/land ratios, etc, etc were all tested during the end of the 1800's and early 1900's.

Since post WWII, SR BR shooters have been trying to find the holy grail and no shortage of resources has been spent to test any and all options. There has been no clear winner.

Style and quality of manf may have improved in the last 20yrs, but there is nothing new here.

The quality of manufacturing, stress relieving and QC testing are what separates a good and great barrel. Also, the quality of the raw material which unfortunately, barrel makes typically have no control over.

As to why some barrels out shoot another (known as hummers) even from the same manf, no one knows and it is more random luck then design.

I presume the TC rifles are using a quality match grade barrel. Why they cost so much more and why they can shoot so well.

The average US manf hammer forged or button rifled barrel can be very accurate but that is definitely more luck then design. Most will warp as they heat up where a quality match barrel will stay true to aim even when hot.

For $3000 (or a whole lot less), you can build yourself a full on match quality rig which will shoot itty bitty groups way the heck out there.

TRG are built for the military/LE audience. Ruggedness and function is paramount. Most tactical rifles would be happy to shoot consistently 1/2 min. The fact that your TRG shoots better is a testament to the SAKO design and quality of manf.

If I had to take a factory rifle for LR accuracy, I would get a Tikka Varminter. I have seen several that shot stupidly well at 1000m.

Thank Jerry for the info, i just like to find a brand of rifle unknon to me and discover it.... i just figure out that a good rifle and a good scope is fun to put together and shoot tiny group... My Big Sky is sitting now on top of my TC Icon P.H. 6.5 Creedmoor and with a bit of load devellopement it is a .4 rig now i am pretty sure i can bring that to .25 as the oal is not definite... Cheers. JP.

Nobody on here has shot every rifle. Everyone will favour rifles they have shot. There are many choices of good factory rifles that can be tack drivers with a good bullet. Pick what looks and feels good to you and fits your budget.
