Okay, let's see what experiances you guys have had.
I'm looking for the worst/best consistancy in a hunting rifle you ever had.
What I am looking for are rifle stories about innacuracy or remarkable accuracy AFTER you tried to fix stuff up , and either fixed it or didn't .

For me, the worst had to be the first Ruger No.1 I ver owned, a light sporter in .243.
I tried everything, pressure points, different scopes , different handloads, different shooters, everything.
The best this rifle ever did was 1.5" at 100 yards, most times it was worse.
Me being who and what I am, was not happy to say the least.

I eventually rebareled it in .308 and it shot like a laser.

The best, well that would have to be a 30'06 that a friend had me fix.
It was one of the cheaper M70's a ranger I think.
They would go moose hunting and everybody would try to hit a piece of 8X10 paper with it, and never could get three shots on the paper.
He would then borrow a rifle and shoot his moose
( did this TWICE!!)

The floor plate was so tight It would not open.
I had to take ouff abbout .075 of it to get that fixed.
T After that the front screw was loose so I tightened it up and found out it locked the bolt up! This was right from the factory.
Three threads were taken off the screw, and that was fixed.
I then bedded the receiver and floated the barrel.
Took it out that weekend and shot 5 consecutive groups with it of less than 5/8" at 100 yards!!
I have since seen other guard screws that were too long in other rifles.
Anybody else?

The best was a Ruger Stainless in .243 that i think Stanway has now??

.............The worst, was uhhh well, hmmmmm i can't and don't wanna say because someone from here owns it now.:D

Best out of the box was a Ruger 77Mk2 HBVT in .223 until I bought a CZ 550 FS in 6.5 swede. I think the calibre had a lot to do with that, the Ruger would consistantly shoot the marker disc out of the target at 100 yards with American Eagle factory ammo. I even worked up a load to match it. Best of someone elses was a 6.5 Mannlicher Schonauer with an original period scope. I bagged 5 bulls at 200 with 4 of them V's. Stunned was I, I should have entered that for my score I would have won the sporter class.

The worst - Winchester model 94AE in 3030 brand new 10 years ago. Didn't matter what I did it shot high and to the right, free hand or benched. Had the sights checked by a Smith, reset, then different sights, then different shooters. Still the same. Sold it! Bought another one and it shot like a dream.

Best and most surprising Marlin 1895 in 4570 with a 22 inch barrel. With open sights and free hand nice tight groupings in the bull.

I KNOW I KNOW.....OH PICK ME I KNOW......!!!!!:p

The best is a Tikka T3 - consistantly will shoot sub MOA @ 300M with 2 different bullet weights (premium hunting bullets) - haven't really tried any different weights yet. Worst is a Rem 700 rifle. Spent a bloody fortune on it in time and money - new barrrel, free float, bedded, recessed crown, trigger job, shims in - then shims out, on and on and on. Started out as a 1.5 MOA rifle, now on very good days I can drop that to 1.25 MOA no problem with match bullets. Wooppee!! Luckily there is some sentimental attachment there - why else would I keep it??

Remington 7400 jam-o-matic in 30-06.
I worked on it, two different gunsmiths worked on it.
Three different owners worked on it. Jamming POS SOB. It's out there somewhere, beware!

My greatest success story, is my ongoing project rifle, my 1892 Winchester.
It now wears a '94 Winchester Barrel, (Thanks Tiriaq) has been changed from 38-40 to 44-40, has had considerable parts modification inside, has been home hot tank blued, has had the forend loosened up, and has been under continuous load development.
Original groups, whitnessed by DarrylDb, were an unbelievable 12" at 25 yards!
Groupsd now are sub four inches at 100 yards, and shrinking.

worst shooter

I had an older Winchester in 30-06 that you couldn't hit the barn twice in a row with. I tried everything from floating the barrel, scope changes and about 15 different handloads. Finally someone wanted it more than I did , so out the door it went.
It shot 2 inch groups no matter what I did, ok for hunting but if I can't get them into an inch then its time to sell.
Every Remington I ever owned shot very well with a little load development and time.

Best: Tie between Rem 700 .308 that I still own :D and a Husqvarna .308 that I wish I still owned. :(

Worst: Sporterized Mauser '98 in .30-06. Thank God that rifle is loooong gone. :runaway:

Haven't you learned yet ya never sell a Husky.

Worst: Remington Model 74 Sportsman in 30-06. After several trips to a couple of different gunsmiths the damn thing NEVER was able to fire a full magazine without jambing. Sometimes it was the first shot sometimes the last. Accuracy - when the damn thing actually fired - was beyond dismal and 3 shots into a pie-plate at 100 yards provided justification to have a party. That rifle is probably the reason I don't own a single Remington firearm today.

Best: Winchester Model 70 Classic with BOSS in 30-06. From the factory this rifle had a crisp 3 pound trigger and is the most accurate production rifle I have ever owned. With nearly any load it will shoot MOA and with the right loads it will shoot sub-1 inch groups at 200 yards with almost boring regularity.

Yeah, and especially not one that 'shoots' for $350 with a decent 3-9x40mm scope installed in decent rings... :(

'Course you also never sell a pre '64 Winchester Model 70... ;)

Best: a Savage 10fple in .223, after getting the load development done that sucker could shoot amazing if I always did my part. much too heavy for a varmit rig though, she had to go.

Worst: A Ruger M77 in .270. No matter what I did to that rifle it just wouldnt shoot worth a damn. Sold it to someone I didnt like all that much ;) :D

Worst honours shared between a norinco jw15 and a Smith & Wesson 1500 in 30-06
Best would be a tossup between a rem sportsman 78 in .270 and my new CZ 550 in 9.3x62

Nope. Sold it to Doug - why, I don't know. It did shoot good. I think it has bounced around a few more guys since then.

Best - is my Ruger MKII in .308win. It took me a long time to find a load for it. It will always shoot an inch or better at 100m, whether it's hot, cold, or if I'm having a good day or bad day.

Worst - is a tie between a Ruger 77/22 that would shoot good one day and bad the next, and a custom 338-06 which shot very good groups, but I hated pulling the trigger on it.

:)

At that price it makes you wonder why people buy 710 Remingtons.
