hey there, I live in NB so most deer hunting involves either tree stand hunting (longest shot maybe 75yds) or stalking . this being said I am looking for the most reliable all-weather rifle that won't fail me on those uncontrollable weather days , from freezing cold to downpooring rain and something that won't feel like it weighs 100lbs (exagerating) after an hour of walking.

I have recently looked at a browning a-bolt stainless stalker , and a Winchester model 70 EW ( I owned a m70 EW in 30-06 and loved it but I am looking for a smaller caliber this time around) . and I also looked at a Remington model seven and a tikka hunter.

let me know what you think, and I would appreciate any other suggestions as well. thanks
 
I would think pretty well any bolt action or single shot with a synthetic stock and stainless barrel/action would serve your needs well.
 
I have hunted here in NB for quite a few years in heavy snow, freezing rain and very heavy rain. I have hunted here where it was -8 or so in late deer season to +21 in moose season. I've used two different stainless Win M 70s, stainless Rem M 700 and a Marlin stainless XLR 444. I have dropped them in the snow, covered them in pine needles crawling through thickets, fallen in brooks and had freezing rain ice them over. Not once did any of them fail me. In practice the one I hunted the most with was the one that was the most comfortable to carry and shoot, the M 700. This year it has some competition for my attention from a M 70 Ultimate Shadow Stainless I just bought. It fits really well. :D
 
S/S can rust if store damp.
Try a T/C Icon Weathershield.The coating is incredible and this rifle shoot.As we speak,I am coating the bore with Dyna-Bore coat.It will never rust Inside and out.

They are a bit hard to find, but a stainless Model Seven would be the ticket. A stainless SPS would be another good choice. Not as light, but easier to find. McMillan makes a couple nice small stocks with short forends that work well with shorter bbls.
 
I agree with the rifles you suggested especially the T3 mainly because of the detachable mag which is handy , but it seems like the model 7 was made for this type of hunting, Short action, lightweight and fits the shoulder nicely .
 
I was leaning toward something like a .243 where ammo is easily found and it's proven itself time and time again as being a deer slayer ! For shots up to 75yds from a stand or a shot from the ground while stalking I dont think a fella could go wrong.
 
I bought a Ruger American for that same purpose. It's lighter than the 700, less money than the T3, and more reliable than the Axis- it's made in the US. I shoot my deer, just as well as any other more expensive rifle. It has some nice features: adjustable trigger, accutrigger, syn stock, 6.3 lbs, built in base for scope, flush, no issue magazine (replacement costs $39.00) Rifle costs $450, and it has a 3 lug bolt, & silky smooth action. Ther a-bolt is nice, but you want a rifle, that can get wet, and you don't have to feel bad, It's a hunter's dream! Just my opinion.
 
you don't need a long heavy rifle for 75 yards.the mod 7 is a really nice carry gun.i would go 308 ,just for the extra bullet weight, 100 g vs 150-180g . if you happen to hit say a shoulder bone on a huge buck(by mistake) the 100g fast 243 will have a hard time penetrating.im not saying a 243 won't kill a deer guys don't flipout lol
