Most reliable rifle? SHTF scenario

My Two Choices

A Remmington 870 Marine Magnum for its corrosion resistance, stopping power, versatility, and wide availability of 12 gauge rounds:

and a Quackenbush Air gun, in either .457 or .500, because it is silent, requires no powder, and you can cast your own lead shot easily if ammo REALLY runs out.

The way I see it, realistic SHTF scenarios aren't about "combat" either long range or close quarters. It's easy to let our fondness for military-style weapons cloud the way we look at real world scenarios. The reality of a SHTF scenario will be two-fold as far a the need for firearms is concerned. 1. Stopping the people that were ,just yesterday, reasonably well behaved citizens (for the most part, but not all of them) from taking your stuff and/or killing you to get at your stuff. And 2. Feeding yourself and your family.

You really need to look at the environment that you plan to ride out the disaster in. Will you be holed up in a downtown apartment, suburban house, rural farmhouse, etc... There is no one "perfect for all scenarios" gun. But that being said, a 12 ga., such as a marine magnum, is pretty hard to beat. Partially due to the variety of different typed of ammo available for it. Loaded with 00 buck or slugs, it has what it takes to put unruly neighbours in their place. Small game is no challenge with smaller shot loaded in the chamber and if your situation permits, a 12 ga. slug will take doen pretty much any large animal at closer ranges.... On top of that, a .22 revolver loaded with CB longs will kill all the squirrels and rabbits you can eat (or pigeons, alley cats, stray dogs, or whatever), effectively and discretely, even in a crowded urban environment.

Just my 2 cents.....

Well said. It does depend on envieonment. Anywhere, a .22 pistol of some sort is a boon. A revolver can use any .22 ammunition so a light one preferabley with a scope is good.
For two legs, any repeating rifle is ok with a semi being the best.

A long blade like a machete would prove useful too, or an XL parang.

I'd suggest that your SHTF rifle needs may vary depending on where you live.

Unless you plan on sitting out Armageddon in town (probably a bad idea), your needs are going to be zombie defence (in the comic allegory for other more realistic but less than politically correct or socially acceptable threats sense) and food procurement. If you're going to stay in town, anything that'll work on zombies would do.

Assuming that you're going to be sitting out the crisis in your rural, well-stocked luxury survivalist bunker, I propose the following (and make no claims for originality):

A .22 is arguably a must have. Light, effective on small game and zombies (with careful shot placement making up for the low stopping power), ammo is plentiful and cheap and you can lug a couple of thousand rounds around all day long. And reportedly, you can rig homebrew suppressors for them, although that would be highly illegal. A 10/22 with a bunch of BC 25-round magazines makes great sense here;as somebody pointed out a 25-round burst should do nicely on a zombie.

I'd say that a 12-gauge pump is also a must have. Ammo is plentiful, the gun is incredibly versatile and can take everything from bunnies to bears, and is arguably the ideal weapon for close-range or in-bunker zombie defence. As somebody else pointed out, an 870 Marine Magnum is tough to beat, and I agree (I named mine "Alice").

For longer ranges, you'd need a rifle. If you're looking for a pure zombie gun, any .223 black rifle would do just fine, but I'd argue that as you may be using it for hunting as well as defending your bunker from the zombie hordes, you might want a more powerful chambering. I'd suggest that anything that meets the following criteria will do:

Reliability: you want something simple that'll handle a lot of abuse and neglect and still fire. The AK-47 design philosophy applies here; looseish tolerances aren't a bad thing if the rifle will keep on firing reasonably accurately while filthy. The zombocalypse isn't the Olympics; you don't really need minute of angle accuracy; minute of zombie or minute of deer torso accuracy will suffice.

Power: you want something that'll kill any animal on the continent, from polar bears and moose on down. I'd argue that you want .303 as a bare minimum; as others have said, it's a proven moose-and-Nazi killer.

Cheap, plentiful ammo: for obvious reasons. You can loot as many burned-out, abandoned Canadian Tires as you like, you still aren't going to find any .416 Rigby. .303, .308, .30-06, on the other hand, you might.

Portability: you may be lugging it around a lot. With ammo. Something not too heavy or too long will be a lot easier to lug.

High-capacity magazines: because zombies frequently travel in shambling, putrefying hordes.

Rapid-fire capability: because zombies frequently travel in shambling, putrefying hordes.

Back-up iron sights: because scopes break, and if your local Canadian Tire or gun store has already been looted or you haven't got a spare, a rifle without sights is useless.

Sturdy, low-maintenance construction: this should be obvious.

Lee-Enfields fit the above (as would any of the 20th-century military bolt guns, subject to ammo availability). A good SKS would too, although they're a bit short in the power department. Any of the lever guns in an appropriate caliber would do the job. Norc M-14's, any of the fine hunting rifles suggested by the other posters in this thread... really anything that fits the above criteria and works for you.

Not only is this thing going to outlast you past not only your lifetime but your childrens lifetime, ammo is plentiful, the action is proven unbreakable and you dont even need anything to clean it beyond the corner of your shirt and some hot water.

Is there REALLY that much .303 british kicking aroudn still? Because alot of you picked enfields...and i dont really see crates of .303 kicking aroudn in every gun store still. Im thinking i would still be able to pick up ammo...5...even 10 years down the road with a .308, and that is important in an extended SHTF scenario to me.

If you can't get ammo, all you have is an assugly club. Avalibility of ammo is the priority.
Durability is a close second.
It doesnt have to shoot MOA, It just has to shoot minute of "Zombie"

Given these criteria, I would say get a durable .22, a durable 12 gauge, and whatever has the most common ammo for a centerfire rifle.

All about reliability and ammo...

I wouldn't count on scavenging ammo after the S has HTF. Unlike the US, Canada has relatively few stores that sell guns and ammo, and they would be exhausted almost immediately. For me that means picking calibers that are both effective and cheap to stockpile for game day...

Rimfire:

A rifle and handgun in .22LR for putting meat on the table. A few bricks of ammo will do this for quite some time...

Shotgun

A 12ga pump-gun with both a short and long barrel. The short one works for personal defence and hunting larger game with slugs, the long one with a few chokes can handle anything from rabbits to geese. A few cases of ammo won't break the bank either...

Rifle

A reliable rifle in 7.62x39mm, with a sealed case of military surplus ammo in stripper-clips. SKS's are so inexpensive you could have one for each family member...

Handgun

A semi-auto that you know runs well and lots of mags and a good holster. This gun will never leave your side. For me a G17 9mm.

Also, 69santa makes a good point, gunshots bring unwanted attention. A crossbow or something similar could come in very handy when you're trying to keep a low profile.

One SHTF gun is a really tough call. Having lived in the city (TO, thank God that is history! :runaway: ), and in the Arctic (now, :dancingbanana: ), the one firearm I would consider in both environments is a 12g pump with extended mag. It is a fabulous short-range and a fairly decent mid-range weapon. It would put small and big game on the table, and it would strike fear in most zombie hearts. I'd be up sh*t's creek if I was dealing with a zombie sniper though!

So, I would go for the assortment several others have suggested: .22LR rifle, 12g pump, and a good longer range rifle in .223, .303br (lots in the north).

IMHO
