"Mountain" 8x57 load

Bearhunter why are you not a fan of Privi bullets?

I put a 196 grain privi 8mm through the top/side of a small (ish) boar's scapula through to the ball of the shoulder on the offside. Lots of damage but that is expected with that shot placement.
D(ish)RT

Bullet exited, and you definitely knew that it did

I found a little bit of jacket in the offside hide nut that was it.
Conor, I find Privi bullets sometimes won't expand at all or expand to much, and are often very inconsistent accuracy wise from lot to lot.

I went through a lot of them, and wasn't satisfied with their consistency enough to trust them on a hunt, where an animal could easily be lost or worse wounded and get away.

It's just my personal experience with them. Your rifle may shoot them very well and you've been lucky enough they perform well.

If you're happy with them, by all means keep using them. Better stock up soon, because they won't be sending them to North America any more, after Putin called them out.

I have a 700 Remington in 8x57JS. Pet loads are 185 Remington PSPCL, the 196 Oryx, and the 200 Accubond.
W760 is a winner for all these bullets, as is Vihtavuori N150 and Norma 203b. Regards, Dave.
I exclusively shoot bullets weighing close to 200 grains from my 8x57JS hunting rifles, no boat tails, flat base round nose or spire points only.

Velocities are around 2600fps and accuracy is great, as is performance on game.

W760/H414, are my go to powders, over CCI250 magnum primers. VVN150/N550 are good as well.

VVN160 gave great accuracy but velocities were around 2400fps and I wanted "more"

Been working on some new loads and threw a few together.

170gr SST with 49.5gr of IMR 4895 out of my tikka 8x57. Averaged 2710 fps, so a mild load. Shot 1/2".

Turns out if one wants top velocity Re17 is your best bet.

200gr at 5 shot average 2768fps (3400 ft-lbs) and 220gr at 2678fps. (3500ft-lbs). Shot in a CZ with 24" barrel. Based off quick load they're doing about 60-62K PSI. Work up your own loads with caution! Safe in my rifle.

With some of the newish powders available, the 8x57JS is an extremely capable cartridge IMHO.

It likes mid range burn rates, even with the heaviest bullets commercially available right now.

A few decades back, a now deceased friend had a love fest going on with 8mm cartridges.

He had well over 50 different rifles chambered in one form or another of anything shooting all diameters/weights of 8mm bullets. Flanged, belted, and rimless. Many of them were custom chambered with custom case designs.

He had a lovely 8mm Rem Mag, for which he made up 265 grain, hollow point bullets on a Corbin swaging set up.

He gave me a couple of hundred of them, and they shot very well in my custom 98 Mauser, but they were not fast.

The best velocities I could get from them were 2400+ fps, and I was pushing the envelope to get that. It needed to go that fast to be acceptably accurate.

Mr Dgradinaru, giving us excellent results with unobtainium powder is just a low blow. ;-).

However, Hodgdon H100V will give similar results with those bullets.

Not many people have heard of H100V, IMHO, and it deserves a lot more attention than it gets.

I don't know if Hodgdon makes it or if it's coming from another manufacturer, and they're relabeling it?

It has some of the qualities of the Alliant powders, in that the burn rate isn't regulated only by the coating, but with internal regulators as well, making it a "progressive" burning powder.

Alliant powder achieve their velocities, with acceptable pressures by using this method, and it keeps peak pressures lower by extending the lower peak pressure curve by a few milliseconds.

H100V is very slightly slower than RL17, but looks very similar, and meters just as well, and it's still available.

Thankfully I have enough to last me a few years, keep the powder for dedicated hunting loads and have other powder for plinking/practice. The standard powders like imr 4895, 4064, 3031, H4895 are also great as well and am still planning on using them. Hard to go wrong with 180's in the 2700-2800 fps range with 180 NBT's and 180 Barnes TSX's.

Very nice shooting.

I have a couple of rifles used for hunting as well. They are dedicated to that purpose.

I only shoot them to be familiar enough to be able to bring them to battery in the positions I'm likely to shoot.

It's the reason I do my personal use, custom builds on Mauser 98s, Remington 700s, and Winchester mod 70s.

My single shot, centerfire rifles are Martinis, or Ruger No1s.

I like them, I trust them, and I'm very comfortable with them, especially when they fit properly.

I have two almost identical 98s chambered for the 8x57js. They both have surplus NOS barrels, from the same batch.

They both shoot sub moa, depending on the operator.

One has over a thousand rounds on it, and the other maybe 200. The cartridges I load are interchangeable, and it's impossible to tell which fired case came from which rifle.

For me, this is an ideal set up, but not everyone can afford it, nor has the tools to build the rifles.

We all do what is best for us at the time.

Most 8x57js rifles will shoot very well with select hand loads. I find most north american manufactured ammo extremely inconsistent, both velocity and accuracy wise.

I've had some excellent RWS and Norma commercial loads, and I would use them again if I had to resort to commercial ammo.

I was given a full case, 200 rounds, of Privi Partisan, loaded with boat tail, spire point, 170 grain bullets.

The very best I could get my rifles to shoot those rounds was 4.5 moa at 100yds, off the bench, on a rest, and a rear bag for support.

I shot about half of them and gave the rest to a friend to shoot, and he had similar results in his Tikka T3, so it wasn't just my rifles or me.

Also working on a new load with CFE223. Out of a 8x57 with a 24" barrel I did hit 3000 fps with a barnes TTSX 160gr, makes just shy of 3200 ft-lbs at the muzzle. So pretty much 7mm Rem Mag performance. 5 shot group averaged 1.25". Will play around with this load in hopes for 3/4"-1".

I loaded the same bullets in my 338 federal, which seems very close to the 8x57. TAC was the powder of choice in the federal and it shot bug holes with excellent speeds.

 Nice Sauer, 101? . Have ogled a CZ Lux in 8x57, also very nice, nearly dropped the cash but realized it couldn't be ready for our hunt
