Mountain Lions-Thunder Bay

Two mountain lions in a couple of weeks with the first one being 5km from my place which is 30 miles north west of Thunder Bay . I've seen two over the last 40 years but the MNR told me they've been extinct east of Alberta for over 100 years . A dead one was found out in the Boreal Timber Limits just west of town 3 years ago . Ranchers where I hunt in SE Saskatchewan have told me of sightings in the area and a few miles west of Fort Qu'apelle I saw one in a field just off the highway which had been seen earlier in the week by residents of the area ,then there is the one that went walkabout in Moose Jaw. I guess there are still a few wandering in their old haunts.
 
Saw a big cat crossing the Canam north of the McLennan River Recreation site in Sask a few decades ago. When I stopped in LA to take on fuel at the Shell I mentioned it to the guy running the till and he looked at me like I was crazy.
 
There was a trapper near Makwa, SK that got one on his trapline last year and they are sighted regularily in the Cypress Hills in SK. SERM estimates the SK population is around 300....they have been sighted several times in our area by people working on wellsites and several reports have been confirmed of cougar livestock kills(horses) near Maidstone,SK. I've seen one on the way to work one morning at a gas plant outside Grand Cache, AB. Quite a sight to see. Amazing looking animals.
 
In 1985 I was working in Beardmore, ON and a local trapper/prospector who was working for me told me when he reported seeing a cougar on his trapline the MNR said he was a liar.
 
I seen one a few years ago just outside of Newmarket. The farmer where I hunt also seen it on his land a couple of times. shortly after the deer hunting in that area disappeared. Another landowner in eastern Ontario has seen them numerous times also on his golf course.They are around in Ontario.
 
Cougars (the big cats) have been seen twice in the Town of Esterhazy, Sask. in the past 10 or 15 years. Pictures on news / tv of a cougar (mountain lion) in downtown Saskatoon within past five (?) years - seem to follow the valleys - and the deer that use the valleys...

Like a lot of animals, they're expanding their range because of good conservation measures, I'm not a doubter. Look at coyotes.

Regarding the last cougar sighting near Thunder Bay, the Ministry did not show any interest to look at the sight or tracks in the fresh snow. They say it is not under their umbrella and to contact iNaturalist to report any rare animals or plants!
 
I talked to a local farmer a few years ago, claimed to have shot a cougar in his barnyard. Killed his goats and chickens before he shot it. Said it had a long swooping tail. I didn't ask if he had pics.

Also, 2 of our moose group saw one southeast of Red Lake about 5 years ago. Ran across the road in front of them, again no pics, but had a long swooping tail.
 
5 years ago south of Brantford Ontario, my sister was driving home and came up on 2 sets of eyes glowing in the dark. She hit the brakes and one actual jumped over her hood and left behind 2 muddy print marks. When I saw her car the next day you could clearly make out a paw print. A couple of nights later 2 cougars ( not older ladies ) ran across the road in front of my neighbour's truck, hopped the fence and took off. The next morning he went back to the location and a set of cat tracks bigger than his own hands were in the snow. Having friends and family in the OPP, they were on the look out for 2 cougars that had escaped from a registered owner. It was not once in the local news.

Wild pigs were never a thing and now the mnr is asking for help to locate. There was even an article that grizzly bears are possibly making their way into NW Ontario.
