trust me i have been around the block and fully intend to spend my twilight years in jail in Victoria . As why should i pay to be in a home when i am done being who i am doc. on call no bills and playing cards no one visits you in an old age home . In a old age home every day death is there as one less and you waiting your turn . Nothankyou

This thread is great. I lived in the Arctic for several years. I've been sprayed by pepper spray. I've used it on people and dogs, and I've seen it work on P-Bear. It works. Period, as long as it's applied correctly. The only animal in the world that can fight through spray is the human, because they have the ability to think through the sprays effects. And even then, the main thought on your mind is get the F outta there. Animals react the same way when they can't open their eyes, everything burns and breathing becomes labored. They flee and start rubbing their faces. The P-Bear I saw sprayed was doing flips and spins and howled like crazy, then took off like a shot. Every dog I've seen it used on goes nuts crazy and has no clue which way is up, or walks away and sticks their head in the snow and rubs like crazy for hours. Animals have no resistance to spray....
That being said.... I carry spray AND a Kimber 84 in .338 Fed with 200 grn Accubonds loaded close to max when I go in the bush baiting..... Cause I prefer the black ones I'm around now don't get close enough to spray....

Back to the QUESTION,what caliber for a mountain rifle that will address a griZZley, plus all the long shots in the mountains????? Well been there and done that, the 7mm mag you have is fine as far as caliber goes if your rifle is too heavy sell it and buy a lighter version. From 7RM on up to ahhhh yes 30-06 and the 30 mags will be fine. I'm have not seen any reason to use a "big boomer" for B.C. interior grizzley, a hole in the lungs does the job,just give it a bit of time.

The only time I have been even a little apprehensive was when my son and I were bowhunting Dall sheep. He arrowed a nice ram (#4 all time P&Y) and we were packing it back to camp, as we were climbing the backside of the mountain we were camped on we started seeing where big boulders were turned over and still damp where they previously were (it was 25 deg C), we continued over the saddle and down into camp. That evening we placed all the meat to cool out on the low willows (buckbrush) about 30 mtrs down wind from camp. We did have bear spray but no firearms (bow zone only), Thank God we had no trouble that night but I also had very little sleep as it would seem that we had all the stars aligned against us...........almost as though we were baiting, but nothing else we could do, it was already 11 pm and had been going for 18 hours already that day, so had to make the best of it. A bow makes a pi$$ poor defensive weapon inside a tent !!!!!!
He was 16 years old here..........it just don't get much better than this........I have to give him credit too, he never whined once the whole trip and took all the hardships in stride and there were some significant hardships on this hunt. I must also say after this hunt and pack out he has never again said "I'll walk your sorry fat a$$ into the ground, old man" He learned a whole new respect for the fat old man, and a thing or two about sheep hunting.

X2, loved the story and the great picture. Embarrassed to say all my Hoyt target and hunting bows have done is hang in the basement for the better part of last year. Shoulder is better so I'll have to get back at it.
We did have a plan if a grizzly did make an appearance, first I would empty my bear spray into it's face while he got an arrow into it and then reverse rolls and he would empty his spray while I got an arrow into it. At this point we had both been practicing until we could hit a postage stamp at 30 mtrs so we both had decided if necessary we would try for an eye shot...........that was the plan anyway.......didn't have to enact it thank God.......not too sure how it would have worked out !!!
I've spent my life in the bush even packed handguns legally for 7 years when I worked mostly solo as a self employed free miner (prospector) for long guns I started out by carrying short barreled shotguns moved thru several other rifle/cartridge combo's including a Marlin 1895GS 45-70.
If I'm not packing one of my single shot T/C Contender carbines or Prohunter I now only carry one rifle when I head out into the central interior/northern BC it is my shortened to 21" barreled Rem 700 LSS in 375RUM scope is a VX3 4.5-14X40mm B&C reticle.
Loaded with 260gr Accubonds @ 3020fps I am good out to 500 yards loaded with 350gr Barnes TSX @ 2450fps with a XS Sights tall Weaver backup ghost ring sight I cut clover leaf groups at 50 yards.
It is as far as I am concerned it is the ultimate for me hunting/defence rifle/cartridge combo that I could come up with.
Do I need this kind of power to stop a bear probably not but I always remember the story of the guy that lived in the Langley BC area that was mauled by a grizzly 10 - 15 years ago while out hunting when interviewed in his hospital bed he was asked if he was going to quit hunting he said no he was going to buy a bigger gun.
As for pepper spray I have tried carrying it years ago when it first came out my concern is what do you do when the spray can is empty and the bear comes back = I carry firearms cause a dead bear can't come back.
