Well, my 11 year tenure in AB is over. My crown land, my local permission - gone.

Looking for guidance on hunting oppurtunities in Kingston / Gananoque. I exploit all means (Archery, BP, Rifle).

Am I screwed (and dusting off the rods). School me.

I send a PM to my buddy in Kingston. He might hook up with you, although I haven't heard from him for a few weeks. He's an outdoor man and into everything, just like you. Hang in there, he's prolly away on holidays somewhere.

I live 15 kms north of Kingston and the crown land situation, at least within an hour or so drive is "almost" non-existent. There is tons of private, vacant land but it has been next to impossible to get any kind of permission to use. There are very few parcels where the owners will (rent) hunting time, but we lost the piece we were hunting a couple years back when another group came along and kept throwing money at the owner until they drastically "out bid" us. Most property in the area is hunted by the owners or uncles/nephews/cousins etc and you (and me) as "outsiders" are not overly welcome.

There is a ton of crown land in North Frontenac (north of Hwy 7, north of Kingston by about an hour) but it has many "well established" hunt camps. However, if you have an ATV and don't mind making it a bit of an adventure out of it you can get into thousands of acres of decent hunting land.

There just isn't anywhere "public" that you can hop in the car/truck after work and go out for an hour or so.

There is a gun club/range in Kingston (Frontenac Rifle and Pistol) but they have not been taking new members for the six years I have been living here. There is a waiting list to get on the waiting list IF they ever start taking new members. That leaves the closest (open) club that you can use in the Brockville area, approx a 1 hour drive from Kingston (they do offer a discount on the annual dues for members who live in Kingston, but still, a two hour round trip drive to do some shooting is not ideal).

You can fish "everywhere" and there are hundreds of back lakes, many with decent launches - so fishing is abundant, hunting not so much.

Are you in the military and posted to Kingston?

When I was going to school in Ktown I just drove north of the 401 and talked to farmers until one let me shoot on his land. Friendly people, shouldn't be a problem.

I lived in Kingston and Ottawa for 3 years and I gave up shooting and hunting while I was there. The gun clubs are pretty expensive and the access to land is limited. Unless you are willing to drive a long ways off, hunting can be a bit of challenge. There are a lot of people in S. Ontario so it can be a bit of a challenge to get to a good hunting spot that isn't "willed" to somebody. Definitely not looking forward to going back to S. Ontario again.

Yes, posted Military.

Two-Dogs: Your buddy DOUG perchance? He is on Holidays until 15 July 2014. He makes a mean moose spaghetti.

All: Thanks!

Frontenac Rifle and Pistol Club (www.frpc.ca) has great facilities. There's a long wait list but nothing like the 6 years one of the posts above suggested. Hit the website ASAP and get your name added to the list, and feel free to PM me when you arrive if you wanted to visit the club sometime.

Regards,
Peter

Sorry, due to the overwhelming demand for memberships, we have temporarily turned off the wait list. Please check back at a future date to sign up with FRPC.
Note that for general club information inquiries, you should visit the Contact Us page.

This is the message that has been up for the past 16 months on the website. And for at least 3 years prior to that the waiting list was growing considerably according to one member whom I work with.

Given that in (minimally) that 16 month time frame since that note was posted, that there hasn't even been enough movement on the waiting list to even add a few names to the bottom, I wouldn't hold my breath trying to become a member of the club.

I should add that I never checked out the Archery scene while I was there as I only took up archery when I got back to AB. You may be able to find a place to fling arrows very easily. The other thing you definitely want to do is to request a letter from your CoC stating that you were posted to Kingston. With that and your current WIN card (I recommend that you also take some tags or proof that you were able to hunt big game) you should be able to get an Ontario H2 hunting license without having to take a hunter's education course - at the Service Ontario on Division and Benson Street (it was the only Serv ON that did hunting services while I was there). Get used to crazy ideas like tags for coyotes and drawing for Whitetail Deer Does. Good luck with your posting! Despite the limited access to hunting/shooting, Kingston was a beautiful city - just watch yourself blow your mind at the fixed gas prices. When I was in Kingston there was a class action lawsuit for gas price fixing.
