If it was a 1/2 hour commute, I'd go for it (the wife might not) but 1 hour is too far. If money wasn't a problem, I'd actually prefer a acreage close to town (there's plenty near Edmonton) with at least 3 or 4 acres. That's plenty of room for anything I'd ever do.

Three or four acres?! :( If I can't safely sight my rifles in on my property or my neighbours homes are in view then it is too crowded. I don't have a neighbour any closer than 3/4's of a mile and at night the only lights I can see are from a town about 10 miles away. It's a bit too crowded, but I'll have to live with it.

Like my 10 ac at 150 Mile (Miocene actually) that I sold to come to the frozen north? Hell yeah I miss it...every day.

Not to mention the fence, gate and trees to hide the overnight (someone's daughter) guests from prying eyes.

if i could get a hold of a few acres for a good price i would for sure go and buy it. there was a place up north on MLS i believe that had a 3000 acres place way up north for $400,000

I don't think I would because I am already almost like that. I live an hour north of Toronto with lots of prime hunting around me but it's sucks when your in your car 3 hours a day just going to and from work so no I wouldn't. I would just go on weekends or something or even buy a cottage

My Girlfriend was commuting 40 minutes into work from my house... fuel was about $125 a week. So we just bought another house 10 minutes from her work and we are putting a bachelor apt in the basement. The rental will pay the mortgage and she now has a nice investment property.:)
The best part is I am living the bachelor life 5 days a week and she comes out on weekends to perform her duties! ;)
Life is good......

Oh I see house cleaning and stuff? lol,

Canadian Bush Whacker,

It's like a $10 Sako on the EE, buy it.

People lived close to each other for security, assistance, and protection. It's the opposite now. The city is the "wild" now, and the wild has become sanctuary.

If you can financially see yourself clear, do it. I'd rather crawl on split knees than live in a big city

Yeah, my gas bill was a might stout from the 32km drive in (and thus, 32 km back). But the Britney's didn't complain and the privacy was worth it.

JWs only came by once, and I was so impressed they made the trip, well, I sent them away...

But no Britney's daddy ever found me. That's worth something!

I can piss off my front porch, drive 80 kms up to my driveway and there are no street lights or traffic lights. I can also shoot off my back deck. 35 km each way commute is well worth it. I turkey and deer hunt 400 yards from my house.

OK I'll bite what is a "JW" B.U.M.

I believe BIGREDD was referring to those dedicated persons who wake you up early Sunday morning, complete with pamphlets and a "glazed donut" look on their face......

JW... OK yeah now I get ya... just what I wanted at 7 AM on a Saturday Morning... a copy of the watchtower and a theological lecture from some greasy flake in cheap suit! Meet my Mastiff her name is Chloe and she needs a new chew toy!

Nice thing about PEI, you are never an hour away from anywhere..... ok that's stretching it. But I am 5 minutes from the beach, 10 minutes from the city, 30 seconds from hunting (2 minutes by foot). And I do play with my toys in the back yard, no complaints yet and it is legal, as long as I am not hunting, then I have to be 200M from any homes.
BUT we have little in the way of variety to hunt... NO BIG GAME

only an hour commute? my commute to work is usually 10+ hours each way, last time was 22 hours, southeast bc to northeast bc via edmonton.

i live in bc, work in saskatchewan, alberta, and northeast bc (oilpatch stuff). it is great, takes extra time to get home but the lifestyle is far better than sitting in edmonton drinking on my days off. in the management unit that i live in, there is hunting for: whitetail, muley, elk, bighorn sheep, black bear, cougar, and turkey with over the counter tags (no tag for turkey required), and goat, moose, and grizzly on LEH. i have several fishing options within 10 km. life is good, i wouldn't trade it for anything in the city.

all those who are (or are thinking) of having a house with a rental suite, BE CAREFUL! most areas are not zoned for it and the city will close it's eyes UNTIL someone (a neighbour?) complains, then you will be shut down.

Where abouts are you looking Bushwhacker?

I moved out of Winnipeg this summer. Back to the area I grew up in. It takes me 45 minutes door to door to get to work if it's just me.A little longer when I have to drop the wife off at work. We commute together as much as possible to save gas. We bought a Honda Civic and the gas for it is about 40 bucks a week. If that. The truck stays parked in the driveway until the weekend unless the roads are bad.

Was it worth it?
I think so, I'm only minutes away from all my hunting spots and being outside the city, in my opinion, is better for raising a family. Plus, we got a much bigger and nicer house for what we could afford than we would have in the city.

That said, the roads this winter have been brutal. Freezing rain so many times I've lost count. It can make for some stressful days. This is an odd year though and like anything else, you do get used to it.
The highway you travel can make a difference too. Some seem to be bad all the time in the winter.

762nato......that's my test for too many neighbours. If I can't pee off my deck or shoot deer with my .25-06 without offending someone then there are too many neighbours and it is time to move.

Well, I just found out that I am grandfathered on the trappers lic. I had one when I was a kid, lol. So this does sweat'n the deal more, because of the legal plink'n at yotes. Dam now have to go and get 223 cal of cousre this would be a justifed now;)

I was just wondering about that. I want to get a license again. I had one as a kid, but that was 20 years ago. Do they have a record of them going back that far? I really don't want to have to take the course or challenge the test if I don't have to.
