MP43, MP44 (SSD BD42(h), BD44) at the range

Need more than that!!!

Range report! What's it like firing off 7.92x33? If you had to choose between building a nice AR and the BD what would you choose?

Do you have enough experience to compare the BD/StG to anything else?

Recoils less than an AK or SKS in 7.62x39
About the same as an AR in .223

Iron sights are nice and wide, good for low light without the "Nite-sites" luminescence.

Effective range, IMHO, about the same as the 7.62x39, maybe a tad less.

I'm not about to do torture testing on someone else's $3300 gun, so I can't comment on durability and reliability under adverse conditions.

As a historical collection piece, can't be beat. We had an original one many years ago. The "SS" Suréte got their hands on it, along with a PPSH.

Can't compare it to an AR.
Good close combat weapon with lots of collection appeal whereas the AR is a good range gun. IMHO, not that crazy about AR as combat gun. It's only advantages are light weight, sight and add-on options. AK has my vote for reliability and lethality. My ideal combat rifle for the average trooper would be AUG in short 6.5/7mm. supplemented in the squad by longer range MGs and "Marksman" optically sighted semi auto "almost" sniper rifles and, off course, actual snipers and their kit. Let's not forget FACs and artillery support, LAVs and tanks and good supply logistics.
Yes we have lots of experience with AK, AUG, L1a1, HK91 Sig 550, Sig 510, FN49, SKS etc........

How did you enjoy the left side charging handle?
How were magazine changes?
Did you find the action noisy or relitively quiet?
Is there a bolt hold mechanism for a dry mag or do you have to cycle the action to ensure the magazine is depleted?
How "tough" does the rifle feel? Is it a Ford F350 or a Mazda B2200
Do you think this rifle could be competitive in carbine classes or service shoots?(I have no practical experience with either but once I have my kit I would like to get out there)

I am less concerned about the collectors appeal and more concerned about the things the Germans did correctly on the first true Sturmgewehr.

I also have fallen in love with the 7.92x33, I find something about the cartridge highly attractive and I think it may have been overlooked due to being used by the nazi's... Looks mean too... short squat little things with this monster 8mm projectile sitting on top, like a rack of missles or something.

My m14 is going to be my "long" rifle, and as i'm going to take up reloading I am trying to decide what carbine I want. My wife votes for the BD44, and I love the 7.92 but I do recognize that there are a number of other firearms that would more easily fit the role of carbine.

How did you enjoy the left side charging handle?
No problem, use to FN so no problem for me. The Hk91 style is the one I hate, to far forward.
How were magazine changes?
Need to be more deliberate than in speed loading

Did you find the action noisy or relatively quiet?
Quiet

Is there a bolt hold mechanism for a dry mag or do you have to cycle the action to ensure the magazine is depleted?
No hold open.

How "tough" does the rifle feel? Is it a Ford F350 or a Mazda B2200.
Neither, more like Catapillar,

Do you think this rifle could be competitive in carbine classes or service shoots?(I have no practical experience with either but once I have my kit I would like to get out there).
Short answer, no. Just dosen't have the after market parts availability to make it a top competitor. BUT, if you want to have fun, a 4x on it might scare the hell out of some of the participants :) Trigger is Milspec, have to #### your wrist a little forward and get more of your trigger finger into the trigger guard. Second fingerjoint on trigger makes it feel right. Not a match trigger, but very safe.

Hey Navycuda,

The MP-44 is a very tough and reliable weapon with many characteristics that make this weapon wonderful. The first is it's caliber this Round has a lot of kinetic energy that destroy the target not like the much weaker and pathetic 5.56 of AR's.There are many 5.56 I like such as the G-36,AUG,FNC Etc.....But this caliber is not my friend at all.The bad thing about the 7.92 Kurz round is availability.Which at the moment is non exsistant. You do have to reload your own.but it will do it's job well.

As for the MP-44 design it's very ergonomic :
Forestock is nice and slim & comfortable to the hand.
Controls such as Magazine button easier to use than most modern firearms.
Reloading faster than most guns no rocking motion of the mag such as the AK or FN C1,Just a push into the mag.well.
Cocking handle very fast to acquire during stressful situations.BUT must be cautious during firing. The bolt travels with cocking handle.Placement of hand on forestock is crucial.
Sighting is clear and no problem.
Recoil light and easy to handle.
Accuracy is not bad actually pretty good but it's not a sniper rifle per say.Germans tried this and found the G43 a much better gun for the job.

You can acquire all sorts of neat things for this gun such as German ww2 repro mag pouches for $39.00 in Canada.it uses the standard Mauser K98 sling with the frosch (frog in German).

My wife and I both love this rifle but I cannot decide if we should buy the rifle first or the reloading stuff to make ammunition for it.... There are also other firearms I want... the need to have something in my hands now feeling sometimes bumps the savings for the BD to the back of the line.

I have a "two" point setup I really like on my m14 for now, but I think I would try to adapt a single point to the StG whenever we finally do get one.

So the BD44 comes with one magazine right? Is it the 30/5 or the 10/5? What is the "average" cost of magazines? How difficult is it to acquire the new manufacture magazines for the BD? Like to get and stock up 10 to 20 magazines, is it going to be more than the rifle? Does the BD have the slots machined in the rear sight base to allow optics mounting?

I already have a plan for the ammunition and it involves a corbins swaging press...
