whitetail around here are also red during the spring/summer and grey/brown in the fall/winter. wouldn't both species be around the same colors the entire year?

Mule Deer, mule deer, mule deet. If the thing was dressed up in a black trench coat, nail polish and lipstick with a Goth spiking collar around its neck and a ultra depressed look on its face, it would still be a non-hybrid mule deer.

I believe you're right. Perhaps diet and location might play a small part in color though.

i'm not sure. we've been seeing whitetail on nearly every walk with our dogs for the last couple months and every deer has been red like your pic, including the does with twins we saw yesterday.
once fall rolls around they'll all turn more gray than brown no matter where i see them around these parts. must be the season more than diet?
