I came upon some nice wild mushrooms that I had thought were chanterelles. There was a group of them (not cluster) growing under a bunch of oak trees in the soil of a shady bush.

I picked a dozen of them, after bringing them home I am now wondering if they are False Chanterelles??

They are not Jack-o-lanterns.

The ones I picked have very thin singular gills that do not run down the stock and do not fork. The caps are 2 to 7 inches - funnel like yellowish/cream colour (not bright orange) , stalk is 1 to 3 inches long cream in colour no skirt or bulb.

These do have a nice light apricot like smell.

I have pictures available that I could email someone if they would like to help try to identify, please pm me.

Anyone have experience eating chanterelles....and identifying false chanterelles??

I enjoy identifying and researching wild mushrooms, I have a good manual that I use, but I have zero experience with chanterelles and am not sure.

these are looking false...Help needed

If they're Paxilus involutus they'll kill you... or try to, anyway.

Pictures would help - it's impossible to give meaningful input without a good, detailed set of pictures. You can put them up on photobucket and link them here for our resident amateur and professional mycologists... :)

Did they look similar to this?

Those are Paxilus and can kill you.

Not my pictures, but a good comparison I think.

"if you're not sure what it is don't put it in your mouth."

Yes, I definitely follow that rule. But I am looking for information on the mushrooms that I have found and would like to learn about them.

Doc C has posted my actual picture of the mushrooms I found, thanks Doc.

Looking for help, hope to find someone with first hand knowledge.

Here's the pic sent to me by the OP.

I just picked chanterelles this past weekend and those pictured are definately not chanterelles or even false chanterelles as far as I know. I have seen that mushroom quite often but have never picked it as I was unsure of it's edibility. The apricot smell of chanterelles is pretty overpoweringwhen you have a pail full of them. I was always led to believe that the jack o lantern was considered a false chanterelle because of the relative resemblance. correct me if I'm wrong.

I am pretty sure what you picked is some species of Lactarius. When you cut them, is there a milky substance (latex)? What colour does the flesh change to when cut?

The tell-tale for Lactarius is the latex when cut.

IIRC (and do NOT count on it) some of the Lactarius genus are edible, while most are unpalatable or poisonous. It could also be a Clitocybe, but I don't think so.

Yes, they look to be Lactarius, possibly Lactarius trivialis. They do have a very small amount of white milk when you slice them and squeeze. I won't bother eating them as I cannot say for sure if they are safe.

Anyone have extensive first hand experience with Lactarius?

Thanks everyone.

I've been picking and drying wild shrooms (roughstems, russulas, velvet foots, puffballs and agaricus') all week and consider myself to be pretty good at identifying the edible varieties. I can't say for sure what it is you have there but they are not chanterelles and they do look similar to some of the lactarius and clitocybes that can make you quite ill. There are a lot of varieties that are easily identifiable as edible without having to make judgement calls on the questionable ones.

Pretty interesting stuff. My Grandparents used to have wild mushrooms sent to them from Europe, my Oma made some good soups from them. I've often thought about learning which mushrooms are safe to eat in the wild. It would be another excuse to go out in the bush, but I don't really like mushrooms all that much. Plus knowing that they're fungus and the term spore gives me the heebee jeebees
