I live in hope that Savage goes back to its roots and puts this great classic into production once again.

But that may never happen, and I cannot wait any longer. Now is the time.

Which one should I get? I was thinking of getting it in 300 or 250-3000. But there are many models of the 99. Which one is considered the best?

Savage has stated that they won't make a production 99 again since the old machines are too worn out and building new machines would make new 99's too costly and retail prices high.

The cheapest 99's are 300's, and that's my favorite as well (with the brass rotary mag).

Sounds like a bunch of accountants are running Savage nowadays. The same can be said for American industry in general.

Look at General Motors. The company has lost its passion for cars and is run by advertising executives and with the assistance of computer geeks. No doubt the buffoons at GM sit around scratching their heads wondering why they are headed for oblivion. It is a simple fact that their cars are boring and few people want them, no matter how economical they are.

America needs less brains and more balls. Damn the accountants! If they built the Savage 99, expensive or not, gun nuts would buy it. It would make Savage the leader of the recreational firearms industry. The company should say loudly, "the pin heads told us not to build it, but we did it anyways."

That sort of decision makes a good company great.

Savage 99

I only have one... a pre-million serial number 99F in .308 Win.

If you are looking for a working rifle I would suggest either a premil (before 1 million serial number) for a 300 sav. The 99F (featherweight) would be a good choice, but the 300 EG's are more common. As for a 250-3000 I would look for a post mi serial number because after 1 million the twist rate changed from 1:14 to 1:10. The faster twist rate will stabilize the factory offered shells where the 1:14 was designed for the 87 gr (which are no longer available) and may have troubles with heavier or longer bullets. Lots to choose from and they can become addictive.

I have just re-acquired a 99 in 300 Savage which I sold 2 years ago to finance another gun purchase. Thankfully, the owner let me have it back. I'll post some pics as soon as I get back from the current road trip I am on.

I am planning on starting a little lever gun collection and this 99 will fit in nicely -- I already have a beautiful 80+ year old Marlin 410 lever shotty, and plan on picking up a new 338 Marlin Express very shortly. That will be followed by either a Win 94 or Marlin 336 in 30-30, and then finally I want some kind of lever in 22 magnum.

You are aware America's economy is on the verge of collapse from having no brains and all balls, arent you?

what do you plan to shoot with it? Paper or moose. I have hade good luck with 99c's in 308. The 300 is also a good cartridge. 250 is light for deer (IMO) but good for coyotes. All are fun & most accurate enough for hunting.

I have one in 303 savage its older then time, finding ammo is hard for that though, its like gold when you do find it, the grandfather has used the 250 for years now for deer hunting he's 85 recoil is minimal he loves it.

The US Firearms industry seems to be the only on that thinks like that.

The technology that exists today is incredible.

I have seen CNC machines that do incredibly versatile things that would make gun parts look rather boring in comparison.

If they don't want to do it anymore then hand the plans to someone else.

I have a 99E that I bough of an old freind $100.00 years ago. It's in a .308 and in mint condition. It was never used and shoots like a gem.
