I bought myself a CSA VZ 58 in .223, works great with the original magazines, which are expensive, hard to find, and made of plastic. It also has a tabbed bolt carrier, out of the box, so zero gremlin issues.

Then the firing pin broke, they sent me a new one and some "goodies" under warranty, but it left a bad taste in my mouth . Wait, that may have been the rum.... It also ruined the thingummy (breech face, bolt face ??), which was also replaced.

They said the new firing pin was redesigned, but it looks the same to me

I installed the AR mag adapter with the 10 round mag. It works, but it doesn't work well enough to ever rely on it. It's a range toy. The action is too heavy for this set up, after all, it's designed for 7.62 steel case, not 223 brass.

The CZ in 7.62, on the other hand, is not as pretty, not as well machined, and not tabbed. However our buddy Broncoo can fix that. The metal mags are way better, the ammo is cheaper = more practice. WITH AN ADDED TAB, I would rely on this rifle in any situation. Also, berdan primed 7.62 is good to -50, is .223 ?

Scoping either of them is a white elephant, they are at their best with irons IMHO.

I like both, but I trust the 7.62. The best option, it seems to me, is the CSA 7.62, as it comes tabbed, but it is expensive, and hard to find. Im not sure if it takes bayonets.

Feel free to disagree !:nest:

I have the CSA in 556 with the mag adapter works flawlessly, so much so that it burns ammunition like crazy

Second get the side mount and a red dot and go to town

You're the only person I have ever heard of having problems with the gen2 ar magwell adapter. Mine has been absolutely flawless.

Really ? It dented up brass, and jammed ocassionally. Maybe I had a bum one. Sorry, I just dont trust that piece of plastic.

I went with the CSA in 7.62 and have not had one issue with it. It looks as good as it functions. Im very glad I chose the nicer built and nicer looking version VS the older, military 858.

There are lots of threads with people having trouble with the 10rd adapters... a little search will find.

Personally I bought the vz58 in 7.62 as the price of ammo is much better. If I was going to get a 223 rifle that will accept a 10rd pistol mag, it would have to be one that accepts an actual ar15 magazine. Don't want to alter my rifle, not worth it to me for 5 more rounds.

I agree. Adapters are never as good as something produced specifically for a given purpose. I am also a 7.62 convert after this experience, just call me Comrade Boris.

I handled a keltec at the store. The fit and finish were better than I expected, and also felt more solid. The folding feature is interesting, but honestly an NR CZ/VZ can fold up to about the same dimensions, and still be fired.

I think they would sell better with a solid stock, instead of that stupid folder...

I still would only buy a rifle that will accept a 10rd pistol mag without modifications... without spending big $ on an AR.

I like the .223 with gen 2 magwell, 10 rounds of fun! I sold off 11 of the plastic mags at $30-35 a piece here on the EE

I have not tried other mags than LAR mags and they dont always hold the bolt open because the follower tilts down and doesnt engage the bolt catch. This is my only issue with the CSA rifle

I agree, I would probably have bought a su16 if they retailed for $100-200 less as well.

I have the su16 and love it! I was surprised at the lightness of it but I have had no issues from it after a good clean and oil right out of the box. Accurate 223 with 10 round mags I would recommend to most.

I am in the market for a CSA vz in 7.62 though. I think these two rifles combined will keep me happy for some time!

it all depends on what you want to do with it. .223 in my opinion is a niche cartridge. First is was design for full auto which we will never have, second it was design for human targets and it is useless for anything bigger, thirdly it was design to be light to carry more of it. If the s**thitthefan scenario is what you have in mind, you want a reliable compact rifle that can (has to) do everything well (by default it will be a jack of all trades and master of none), in my opinion the only choice is 7.62. If we Canadians had an option of full auto, the consideration could have been different but as it is 7.62 is the king. If range fun is your goal, options are endless.

Try your mags with some new "no-tilt" followers?
