My 22 shoots 1/2" groups at 50 yards/meters all day! Really? Prove it!

First attempt at this.

Rifle. Vudoo 360 20” Kukri, manners prs2, March FX 4.5-28x52, trigger tech special two stage.

Ammo testing day. Best groups from Sk standard plus. Closely flowed by center x. But wind had picked up by the time I was shooting it.

Groups, .331, .278, .231, .443, .216 avg .299

First attempt with the new to me rifle. Been too busy this year but the rain held off and the temperature was great. Took the bloop tube off to give it a try as was shooting with a scope anyways.
The shooter needs more practice and the ammo was not as good as hoped. This was the best grouping with what I brought. The search for what this gun likes continues or is that just the 22LR black hole of hope - the next lot will be better?
Gun - Anschutz 2013 in BR50 stock - this gun is definitely not the problem with the groups
Scope - Sightron S3 10-50x60 LRTD
Ammo - RWS Target Rifle
Mount - Caldwell Rock BR base with Dan Greenlaw adjustable bag windage top (first time using this and recommend it)
Rear Bag - Normally a Caldwell but forgot it at home so used a shotgun case with some rolled up foam on top of that.
Location - Sharon Range #2 - 50 metre distance
Shot the top four groups first then finished in the center
0.32, 0.30, 0.30, 0.24 then 0.45 average = 0.32

Nicely done! Those are very good results with RWS's entry level target ammo. It's possible other grades of RWS such as the Professional Line and Premium Line will have lots that can deliver even better targets.

Thanks Glenn I appreciate that. My usual goto is Center X but it was worse than this. Hopefully this lovely fall weather holds and I can try a couple other types.

Some nice shooting there mineguy. Your comment re Center-X is interesting. I haven't had much luck with it in recent years either. I had 1 brick that shot well several years ago, since then it's been meh. The price doesn't reflect that, of course.

I've been using Standard Plus in both my 54 and CZ with good results, the only caveat is that you have to lot test to get the best out of any ammunition. Standard Plus is no exception. The lots I have work well in my rifles, others didn't.

Many will disagree with this, but I'm of the belief that simply blindly buying top-grade ammo doesn't guarantee top grade results. If that were the case, Eley and SK wouldn't have international testing centres to evaluate how different lots of the same ammo work in your particular rifle. High level competitive shooters would simply buy Eley Tenex or X-Act by the case without testing it, knowing it would be competitive for them. That's not what happens.

My thoughts are that I'm sure there are lots of Center-X that will shoot really well in my rifles, but I'd be lot testing $15/box ammo to find it, rather than $8/box. It comes down to what you want and what you're willing to spend to get there.

My experience with RWS Target Rifle was middle of the road, it worked OK in most rifles I tried it in. My Tikka didn't like it. The CZ shot it decently in warm weather, accuracy fell off when it got cooler. The 54 isn't fond of it. That's one lot, others would no doubt perform differently.
Supply was hit or miss unfortunately, and it was more expensive than SK, priced similarly to Eley Club.
I also found it to be quite dirty, cleaning patches came out a lot more black than with SK or Eley.

Thanks Chilly. I have a brick of Center X left of that lot that will end up being used by my CZ455. It likes everything it seems. I sold my 64 MSR and it had liked that lot of Center X but the 54 nope. At least not for what I am trying to do.
I found your comment on dirtiness interesting. You are right it was dirty but three patches and it was clean. Literally 5 min and all was good. I was surprised and pleased as the night before I shot a few hundred rounds with my Ruger Mark IV using some bulk CCI Blazer ammo someone gave me. What a mess. Spent an hour cleaning everything out of that. Incredible the difference.

To keep things in perspective, no one should dismiss a variety of ammo with a good name out of hand because of experience with only few lots. Using arbitrary lots of any match ammo can easily result in disappointment and complaints that "my rifle doesn't like it".

It's not a matter of a good rifle not liking the ammo, it's usually inconsistent ammo. There are lots that will shoot.

Agreed. And I am being picky it seems. My 64 MSR shoot an average of 0.28" with the Center X lot I have. The 2013 shot worse than that so did not post it. A different day it may shoot better with the 2013. the joy/frustration of 22LR :)

I've got an old Cooey and 22 ammo from the 50s - Imperial or Canuck I think - I'll give it a try.

Just kidding.

I finally tried and succeeded the 1/2" challenge, on September 4th. I would have posted earlier, but I tried to improve on this target a few times ... so far this is the best I can do. Rifle is a Walther KKM. Scope is a Redfield RM6400 20X. Front rest is a Bald Eagle, rear bag is a Protektor. Ammunition was Midas +, given to me by a member of my club (thanks Steve). This target was shot on my own home range, my bench is literally outside my front door. Conditions were perfect, 65°F, no wind, no mirage.

I've rounded all my groups up to the nearest .005", and I used .210" as my measurement of a single hole. Groups sizes are; .140", .260", .280", .305" and .385". Average group size, .274".

Great shooting. I added you to the successful list.

Hello Folks
I joined this forum in 2008 and very soon after this thread started (in 2013) I stopped in for a visit and was hooked on the idea of shooting the challenge.

It was a lot harder than I initially thought although I did impose a few of my own personal limitations. I wanted to do it with a sporting rifle that one could go hunting with - thats still a fairly wide range of options but for me it ruled out single shot target rifles like a Vickers I own and a BSA International that came my way during the journey.

My shooting has definitely improved as I've tried shooting the challenge, I am a lot more conscious of trigger control, hold and environmental factors than I once was.

The journey has taken several rifles, a Anschutz 1415-1416, a Winchester M52 replica, a CZ 455, two EM322's, a Ruger 10/22 HB, a Ruger American rimfire Target HB and some others I forget.

Now I finally have a target to submit that I hope will make the grade. It was shot at 47M with a Lithgow LA101 22lr. The rifle is a standard synthetic stock model that I bought used, however I'm sure the trigger has been altered, it has a superb break at 725 grams (26oz). Scope is a Sightron S111 3.5-10x44 and the ammo I shot was a batch of Eley Match that I've hoarded for the challenge after it "proved out" in other rifles.

Groups are 0.365, 0.312, 0.193, 0.300, 0.298 for an average of 0.294
