I cut a section of brass out of a .308 casing and made a nice tube to hold the nozzle open, then a small funnel into that. Use a wooden dowel to pack the sand in there.
My 22 shoots 1/2" groups at 50 yards/meters all day! Really? Prove it!

AND now for the rest of the story . . .
22forever started off the shoot with X-Act, the most expensive of the Lapua Match line.
He was not impressed and reverted back to Centre-X.
His first target with Centre-X scored 2300/2500 on the ARA target!
And that is the rest of the story!
I hope I measured these correctly. The distance shot was 58 yards from muzzle to target.
L to R
0.567 - 0.22 = 0.347
0.679 - 0.22 = 0.459
0.613 - 0.22 = 0.393
0.633 - 0.22 = 0.413
0.610 - 0.22 = 0.390
Average group size = 0.400
Ammunition: SK Standard Plus
Rifle: Anschutz 1710 HB
Scope: Sightron 10-50x60
I shot this target this morning. I didn't begin by attempting to meet the challenge. I was testing ammo from a lot that I recently got and was shooting at a photocopy paper target. After the first three (L to R) looked promising through the scope, I realized that this target might be decent. The fourth bull's group is to the left because I began with a flyer to the left so I aimed at it.
Good shooting. I added you to the successful list on the first page.
I had thought of gluing everything in place and when I tried to move it . . . it appears to have already been done.

I'm assuming that works by the way it wraps around the bottom of the forend hugging the stock a bit better, and not so much due to the texture of the leather??
Is that right?

It hugs the forestock more tightly as the front bag is a wee bit wide.
Was out with some new shooters so didn't get to hit this challenge hard. Next weekend im going to go out alone and hopefully nail it ! Teaser pic of the one group I got to sit down and shoot today.

No surprisingly, I knew CZ's had excellent quality. I was looking at a LUX but I couldn't get past the exclusive "Canadian" stock. Threw a cheap 80 buck 3x9 on it and went to work. Sighted it in quickly, dialed it in. Got time to put one good group on paper before I had to start letting the new shooters get some trigger time, they were getting anxious. Surprisingly over the m14 and 9mm most liked this 22 the most ! lol

weasel1, that's impressive with a 597! quite a few 10/22s that can do it, so its not because its a semi, but if you get your 597 on the official list it might be one of the most accurate ones in the country.
Well, there is a new respect for the names on this list ! I went out with 200 rounds and a wack of targets. Couldn't put 5 groups under 1/2 together. Would get 3 or 4 but always blunder on the 5th... Not sure if its the rifle or the shooter.
I'm using a 3x9 Bushnell ... Cost me 80 bucks. Shooting from front bipod rear bag. I think im going to buy a new optic for it with higher power and switch to sand bags on front and back. Then I think I will nail it !
Honestly one of the hardest things I've tried to do in this sport since picking it up. Pic of a random target for fun, the HIVIS targets make the grouping look bigger then they are because the extra 1mm around on the target.

You might have better results with a scope that has a bit more magnification. Also, look for a scope with relatively thin crosshairs for fine target work. A 9X scope will do fine for shooting a deer or a moose at some distance, but when your crosshairs pretty much cover up a half-inch circle you're hard pressed to know exactly what you're aiming at. I'm not saying tight groups cannot be shot with a 9X scope; it's just much easier if you have more magnification so you can see your half-inch target well.

^^^ Agreed. Also, try some premium ammunition. That can make a difference even with a 3-9 zoom scope.

If you find the Minimags work consistently enough in your rifle - use them. There is no predicting what is going to work, however the indications are that higher grades of any brand of target ammo might work better.
It's a trial and error process to find the show pony. Eley, Lapua/SK and RWS are the leading brands.
The hivis targets are OK for noticing the impacts but a smaller simpler target matched to your reticle and printed on card stock will result in more distinct groups. Something else you might try is to adjust the point of impact so the group forms off your point of aim(POA) so you do not spoil or distort that POA. Due to the lower power the definition of the POA may be inconsistent.
