My 22 shoots 1/2" groups at 50 yards/meters all day! Really? Prove it!

Among the most widely or perhaps most readily available quality ammo that can give you a fighting chance to get good groups is SK Standard Plus. I've been able to find it when needed. There is, of course, better ammo, but with the right gun and perhaps a bit of luck small groups are possible. Here are two groups of five shots with SK Standard Plus at 58 yards with a 1710 HB.
Finding the right ammo for your gun is a fickle thing.My savage mark ii's love SK std plus my CZ452 varmint not so much.Still working on finding that right ammo the CZ likes.So far it seems to prefer RWS and Remington Subsonics.I have 4 different kinds of RWS to experiment with this weekend.Best I've done with the CZ on one piece of paper is a .33/.41/.51/.58/.58,still work to be done but getting closer.

These groups are less than 0.5 Inch for sure! Now what you need to do is to get five groups in a paper
22's are probably the most fickle of guns for ammo sensitivity. I have 5, and no 2 like the same ammo.
I finally get to wade in on this thread!
Yesterday I was out plinking away at testing some ammo at 25 yards. In retrospect I wish I'd done the testing at 50 since the groups tended to rip at the paper too much and at 50 the results would have been more definitive. After it was over I set one of those flip up Caldwell targets out at 200 yards and started having some fun with my Savage BTV and some common Blazer. The Blazer wasn't as tight grouping as the CCI SV, CCI Greentag or the Lapua SK+ but I had lots and it was all just for fun at that point.
As it happened I was able to attain fairly regular hits on the 2 inch discs with a few 4 and 5 hit "strings". And even the misses were clearly close to grazing shots by the way the sand behind the targets was jumping. So in looking it up 1 MOA is 1.05" at 100 yards. The target discs are 2" diameter and the hits on the lower set of four ranged from edge to edge with a few in the middle area. So I'm roughly getting 2 to 2.5 inch groups at 200 yards. Oh, the conditions were heavy overcast and as calm as could be and still be outside.
So 2" at 200 yards equates to 1" at 100 and .5" at 50. And I was only using the Blazer over the SV, Greentag and SK+ because I have lots of it. If I'd sighted in with any of those three I'd likely have gotten tighter enough results that I'd have gotten longer strings of hits with less misses.
The Mk II BTV is set up with a Simmons 3-9 scope and aside from a modified Accutrigger spring for a lighter pull and a solid lower plate instead of the sheet metal one it's stock.
The rest used for this was just the blocks and sand filled inner tubes that live at the club's range. I really need to get my own set of bags or a rest for this sort of bench rest shooting.
Sorry there's no target to show. Just the happy face I was wearing on the way home and I forgot to do a selfie. And I know that this makes the "claim" more or less a point of trust. But that's OK. What it's done for me is make me a believer that a .5" @50 yard group on a stock mainstream rifle shooting less than match quality ammo is quite possible.
Oddly enough I found myself thinking about a better scope and treating the rifle a little more carefully as I put it to bed.
I think I'm also going to make it a point to go out and do some 50 and 100 yard paper groups in the near future with those other three. But first I need to get a better set of bags or an adjustable front rest so I'm giving the rifle a fair chance to see just what it can truly do instead of the wobble bag setup I was using.

I have tried weighing the cheaper ammunition and found up to a 10 gr variation in weight, which is very significant for an approximately 46 gr cartridge.
If you sort your cartridges by weight, you will reduce (but not eliminate) the variation. Premium ammunition will, of course, give you much better and consistent groups, however, it does have the premium price.
Finally got the VQ out to the range to see what she would do. Zero other shooters at the 25/50 yard gallery, and almost no wind.

My son has a CZ, and it prefers the Remington Subsonics. My Savage prefers the Win Subsonics, which are now impossible to find. I found some CCI Subsonic which I tried for the first time yesterday, and I did a 10-shot group into an inch at 50 yards, with 8 shots into about 3/4", and it was quite windy, so I'm pretty sure I could do 5 shot 1/2 groups on a calm day. With the Winnies, I can do that at 100. Ill keep you posted.

Went out today and attempted this challenge for a 2nd time, got closer than the first but still not there. 3 out of 5 groups under a half inch.
Rifle is a Savage MKII FV with the Weaver 3-9x scope that came with my Model 11 Trophy hunter, using Lapua SK.

I went out last week for some more ammo testing with the new CZ452 Varmint and finally got around to putting the calipers on the groups.

So I was attempting the 50 yd game on Friday. Getting frustrated as I thought my groups were way outta whack (forgot my tape measure). Which once I got home I realized I wasn't even that far off. Anyways, I switched targets and put in the butler creeks with fed auto match, which didn't do well with my factory ruger receiver, and started to let off some frustration.... Well that's when I came up with this... One flyer and 9 rounds in a half inch group.
But I ran out of time to play anymore. I will have to take a better look at this auto match stuff again.
I'm running Dlask receiver and .920 barrel. With CCI SV I was getting very close to completing this challenge.
Hope to get it done before the snow.
