Attempted this today and to be honest this was not the first time trying but things worked out better today due to better ammo. Rifle is a modded ruger 1022, my 22 built for the gopher patch. Started out life as a factory 1022 target. original barrel shot ok but was very very picky. upgraded to a GM 16.5 inch fluted. Much better accuracy across the board and the reduced weight and better balance made the rifle come alive in your hands. The trigger has been upgraded with a power custom hammer and sear and extra power hammer spring. the only thing I would change is a stock with more vertical in the grip but cant find one that fits my small hands. scope is a Nikon prostaff rimfire 3-9x40. I attempted this challenge before with sk match 40 gr high velocity hp. I got close but not good enough. That ammo will do 2 out of 3 groups in .5 or less and 3ed will be .6 or so. Excellent gopher ammo, never ever jams, very few fliers and they are slight fliers. Not the greatest small group ammo.
Today I tried federal champion standard velocity 40 gr solid on sale at cabelas for $3.50 a 50 box. No good. Groups averaged in the .65 range. Too many fliers.
Second up was eley sport. $9.99 per 50 box. It very shot well with no fliers. I did have some fte with this ammo and it hit a good bit lower than the federal.
Conditions were cloudy with the odd drizzle. Winds mild from my 5 oclock. Group 1 and especially 2 did not have nice defined holes due to damp paper from the off and on drizzle. I let it dry with the breeze and got better results. I did quick measurements at the bench and then remeasured once inside, thus the whiteout on the target. I subtracted .190 from outside measurement cause that's what my holes seemed to measure.
