My 98k (pic heavy)

#1.... mine fits over, so did my gew 98... Maybe I'm just weird though.

What do you mean by the bolt not being smooth? It's possible there's still cosmo hiding where the bolt lugs engage the reciever just behind the chamber. I've mostly had it in mosins. Strip the wood off the gun and give it the hottest bath you can with soapy water. More, hotter water = less cosmoline hiding in your gun.

Just remember to really thoroughly clean whatever you wash it in, cosmolene will leave it looking like a plugged toilet.

By the action not being smooth i mean that when i rotate the bolt. and slide the action back. it feels stiff and as if something was keeping me from being able to bring it back. its just a bit of resistance. -- hot water and metal barrel sounds like rust to me!!!.

so the bayo will slide right over the clearning rod?? - excellent!

- Bayonet is made to fit over the cleaning rod, if it does not then the rod is not the right type or dried grease or rust are interfearing.

- Correct designation is K98K or Karabiner Model 98 Kurz

Remember the K98 is a ####-on-opening type of action as opposed to the Enfield so you are going to get a bit more resistance when opening. That said, I would completely disassemble and clean the bolt. That is one of the first things that should be done on an RC K98. Likely there is some crud around the firing pin or in the safety mechanism.

I know I am being a Grammar Nazi, but could we please spell the German word for short, like this: kurz.

Just remember that the 'z' makes at "tz" or "ts" sound. Same as when you pronounce the 'z' in Grammar Nazi! :)

By the way, JP is correct about the bayonet. The Seitengewehr S84/98 bayonet is designed to fit over the cleaning rod installed on the rifle. There should be a small opening above the rifle attachment port to facilitate this. I have tried it on all my K98's with 10" and 12.5" cleaning rods, and with early war wood handled bayo's and bakelite handled bayo's.

I defintely need a drink, sorry Gentlemen, how wrong I am! Of course the bayonet fits with the cleaning rod. I just tried it on all my 98s, and it functions perfectly. Don't know what I was thinking.
That's what you get for assumptions:redface::redface:
Thanks for the lesson, well learned!

Here is my question about my Kar98k, the butt stock has the same serial number as the receiver and barrel but when stripped down, there is a different serial code stamped on the inner portion of the stock, same with the hand guard, any ideas what is going on here ?

Where is the serial number on the stock stamped? If it is on the side of the buttstock by the bolt disassembly disc, it is the reciever serial number that was then stamped onto the non-original stock when the rifle was refurbed by either the Yugo's or Russians. The serial in the stock inlet is likely the original stock serial as it left the factory.

That makes sense, the serial of the receiver is engraved in the left side of the butt stock. I figured it wasn't standard by German arsenals as my Gewehr 88 and 98 do not have that feature.

So after taking a look on the exchange and other sites i have found a few bakelite bayonets....the price range is rather large. i seen one on this site for $250 !!! and its only advertised at 40%! some other ones from marstar are going for 80 ish? and on another site 180 ish. why such a huge range?? how do i narrow down my search?

Thanks a lot!

Ones with scabbards, even though they do not match, are worth more than the bayonet by itself. If you want to get the whole package (bayonet, scabbard, and frog) be prepared to pay over $200 (depending on overall condition).

they are listed as originals....is this too low? what price can i expect for a good condition wartime 98k bayonet?

If you are not looking for a pristine, matching serial (scabbard and blade) example of a K98 bayonet, P&S Militaria has a couple of originals bayos for sale with the plastic grips for like $60-$65. Good price for the bayo and scabbard. Go to their site and click on Bayonets.

Pick yourself up an original (or postwar) tobacco tin cleaning kit for it as well if you are still looking for accessories.

I got a Seitengewehr 84/98 pattern bayonet for christmas! Here are some pics. one thing I like about it is that it has multi colour handles. one is brownish, and the other is black. At first I was pissed thinking it was mismatched, but when I took it apart I found they both had serial #'s that matched the bayonet and scabbard.
