My 98k (pic heavy)

well I'm glad I didn't settle for one of those......one things thats kind of odd... when I'm looking at the bayonet in my hand I can't see ANY of that rust you see in the pictures. but it all comes out in the photos. has anybody else experienced this?...I'll be sure to post a pic of the bayonet on the rifle.
Thanks for lookin!

The camera "sees" and processes light differently than our eyes do. That effect can also happen with pictures taken of freshly waxed auto paint in hot weather (you see the swirls from the buffer) or Polarizing treatment on windows/sunglasses. Pics taken with the low-lite setting and flash?

Old oxidization.

I believe (can't remember for sure though) that the rear sight blade is that purple-ish colour due the blueing solution being too hot when the part was dipped.

The Plum colour is because the steel has a high nickel content, you will note that they are the springs (rear sight spring, bolt stop spring, extractor is often plum too.) that are plum colour. While unrelated to the K98, often the plum colour will expose a reweld receiver i.e. Garand, M14, etc.

Originally the springs were left wit the blue-ish colour after tempering the steel. they were not blued.

Any idea what could have made those nicks at the end of the bayonet's handle ? Doesn't look like tool marks to me so I figure this must have been thru whatever use the soldier that carried it made of it.

does anybody have any pics of RC k98 with removed varnish they would like to post?

There's pics of my RC mauser. I have refinish the stock with 2 coat of stain and 4 coats of minwax antique oil finish. Give a nice military like finish i think. Sorry for the quality of the pics.......
