I had a great time last night and rang in the New Year with a fair amount of Absinth that I purchased from some Gypsies. Perhaps unsurprisingly I had some visions after I fell asleep. I think it was after I fell asleep but it may have been that phase in between wakefulness and sleep where awesome ideas dance in one's head. Before I continue I should give credit where credit is due - C-FBMI's .234 project was the baseline and impetus for my idea. At any rate I always keep and pad of paper and a pencil beside my bed in case I dream of the winning Lotto numbers so I was able to jot down the idea before it was lost to the etheric world, from whence it came.

Now I have a spare .270 barrel kicking around and I want to convert it to a .234 of some sort. Yeah, yeah, I can hear you all now: "1899 you can rebore to a larger caliber, but there is no way to make it smaller". Wrong my friends. Wrong.

Devcon is the answer. My thought was to simply fill the bore and chamber with devcon, let it set and then send it out for a rebore and rechamber. Almost as soon as I had the idea I thought - "how the heck can you be certain the new bore will be centered"? And the answer came to me just as quickly. I can put a small wooden dowel down the bore before filling it with devcon! But wait - how will I center the dowel? Aha - I can use fishing line on the breech and muzzle ends to hang the barrel horizontally - naturally using a level to ensure it is perfectly horizontal. I can then slip in a longer piece of dowel and tie it out the same way as the barrel. One would of course need to use a tape measure to ensure the two ends of the dowel are the same distance from the hanging point - remember the barrel was already leveled correctly.

Great, but "how will you get the dowel out after the devcon sets"? I've thought of that also. Remember how the wooden dowel is longer than the barrel? Well I will light one end on fire with a small torch and use the sucking function on my shop vac to suction the other side (non-lit) of the dowel to burn it through the barrel - kind of like sucking on a large cigar. The only concern is that this may heat treat the devcon. Do you think this will cause difficulties with the rebore and rechamber?

I was also thinking of recontouring the barrel by hooking it up to the rotisserie on the BBQ and painting devcon on with some method but I don't want to over complicate the project at this point.

OK, so did I miss any important steps? Maybe I should patent the process before I post it. What the heck, such a good idea should be public.

Happy New Year y'all.

Sounds like a great idea, I'd use duct tape to recontour the barrel then spray paint with BBQ paint for a cool tactical look ,make sure you video the first shot for posterity. :)

It'd probably be easier to rig up a centralizer for the barrel. Some sort of cap that fits over the barrel end with a hole in the centre to pass the dowel through. That way the dowel will be held securely in the centre of the bore and if necessary you can move the barrel around without worrying that the dowel's wobbling around.

Let us know how it works out for you.

I would just jam string cheese around the dowel at the muzzle and then tamp until it is centered.... then fill with devcon from the chamber end, then repeat with string cheese in the chamber end... once the devcon sets, leave the barrel in the cellar until the mice take care if the string cheese and the burn out the dowel.... done!

So ,,,where you get that hoch?? And can you get more?:onCrack: OK but seriously what about chamber erosion with that stuff will that stuff hold up ?thermal expansion dissimilar materials, is worth the effort ? And the eventual catastrophic failure BOOM!! If you do go through with it, want the video please! Just another thought( commit from the peanut gallery) paper patch, or sabo carrier, or if you must over bore to a wild cat caliber, better chance of non catastrophic failures just my two cents worth:cool:

I think you are putting way too much energy into this.

First off, forget the Devcon. Liquid titanium is the answer. Secondly, why shrink the bore when you can sabot the bullet. Dip the base of the bullet into the titanium and let it harden. Run it through a sizer and use the 270 barrel as it sits. Most likely the titanium sabot will fracture on it's way through the bore and you will be able to shoot grouse at close range just by shooting over their heads. There is every possibility the bullet will actually come out pointy end first.

I would be very wary of ideas presented by the green fairy. ;) I suggest you stick to Jägermeister next time you indulge in a "herbal" product. :D

all I can say is wow. Document this on video, and ensure your friends will upload it in the event of A catastrophic failure.

hanging your barrel from the rafters will insure that bore is plumb, your idea is flawed with the great amount of error in your plan trying to level the bore while hanging it vertically, just form that point alone you should have realized it was a dream.........

now because your in the thinking/dreaming mode and I have no use for any 270 barrels........here is a meathod that will work and work well....get a .234 rifles mandrel made up and then hammer forge your 270 barrel down to fit tightly on the mandrel, remove the mandrel and rechamber, thread and crown.........everyone knows hammer forged barrels are way more accurate then cut or button rifled barrels

Why now just wrap the bullets in duct-tape? Sort of a Red-Green sabot.

Or just fill the bore with high pressure foam... fire a round, and the first bullet will form the bore... the friction should heat treat the foam and if you reverse rifle the bullet, it should set the bore rifling at the same time... bullets 2-5, should print under 1/2 MOA...

Just put the barrel onto a photocopier and reduce it to 88% - why make things more complicated than they need to be..Sheesh!
What are you planning for 2016? Maybe I can be of assistance again.

Yikes. Hope you've got some Motrin for the morning.

As a tube is stretched, the diameter is reduced. Just heat the 270 barrel till its glowing, then use a winch or come-alongs to stretch the barrel out a few inches. Stuff a caliper in there and stop when it hits .243.
