My Deer Shot

unstableryan, your story should be tacked up to, as Kodiak said, s**t happens. Because it happens is the very reason one should shoot at the largest lethal target every time. Anyone who says, "I never missed a shot in my life" hasn't done much shooting.

That is what makes me, and many others, dislike neck or head shots as a first shot. Perfectly done they are spectacular, but just a little s**t happening will make for a wounded deer with full mobility that will likely make a poor blood trail and have a long suffering death after you lose it. And s**t WILL happen.

I wont' shoot a deer in the rear end on a first shot either for obvious reasons (maybe I wouldn't be so noble if it was a world record head) but once it has been wounded, I too will take any shot presented from almost any distance I think I have any chance of connecting. Once the shooting goes past one shot, I want it over as fast as possible, meat loss be damned.

Lots of people who call themselves hunters will not make the effort you did. It is good that it turned out well in the end.

Sorry rral, I'm in my 30's and been around a few blocks more than the average Joe. And of your admitting to a miss as you say anyone who hasn't missed a shot hasn't been shooting long, actually it means they have not taken the wrong shot. Some make
poor judgment in their early years of hunting, learn from it and never repeat it. I've missed lots of critters and maimed some too, only reason for it was I pulled the trigger when I shouldn't have, I was too far, poor rest, shakey, winded or didn't wait for it to busy it self. Aiming for a bigger target is just an excuse to take shots while less than ideal circumstances. I you only shoot under ideal, you don't miss. Admittedly some people are just too old and shakey to for head shots and have no choice but to go for the barn door, they just need a reminder that some people are capable of making shots that they can't. I still do miss some shots on pests, entirely my fault too, it's part of the fun
of rodent hunting, stretching my abilities one foot at a time.

I shot a B.C. coastal bucks' lower jaw off once. The blood sprayed out like a fountain. It died pretty quick and I didn't lose any meat. I was happy with that.

Super are you saying it not uncommon for senior
citizen shooters to be less steady than he was in his 20's and 30's? Judging by your post count you've been posting eons before the net was released to the public... Just being defensive mabey? Please don't get too upset and have a stroke, I'm just goofing around old fella.

Personally I think some people need to be a lot less critical. There have been many hunters who have aimed for the heart/lungs and instead took out a leg or the shot went a little too far back and then had to go tracking a wounded animal. Every hunter has had at least one bad shot in their life (if you haven't you are either lying, haven't been hunting for long, or it just hasn't happened yet but it will).

But seriously if you don't like it then don't reply.

I'm with the Doc on this one.

Good job and congrats! :)

Shot a doe last year right between the eye balls at 30 yards. Did have to throw away any damaged meat. Just the head.
If I am hunting for meat, I will take a head shot at a standing deer under 50 yards.
Good job kevguy.
