My Drilling journey

Just an update...I think I am pretty much finished with what I wanted to do to make this package complete. I got a case for it...

I had to change the interior around a bit to make the specific accessories fit. Not as hard as one might think. The felt I got wasn't a perfect match, but close enough...

Here it is all put to bed...

Also got set up for "business" too. I have a few leads on some loads but I need to determine what the twist is and what will stabilize best in this little beauty.

The S+B factory shells will more than suffice in the meantime for any deer hunting I may do. I am absolutely itching to get it out for pheasants. Raining today and I don't want to get it wet *sigh*.

I really want a drilling too. Its my dream gun. I've been eyeing up a Sauer 3000 16x16 over 7x57r. I like bird hunting more than big game but... I still love big game hunting. So its the perfect gun for someone like me. The amount of times I've seen deer while out grouse hunting is staggering. If only I had a rifle with me but I don't want to carry two guns.

Thanks for the informative and entertaining post. I am another fan of the Drilling, have owned a couple of Sauers, and currently shoot a Krieghoff 16x16/7x57R w/.22 mag insert. they are wonderfully versatile and effective. I use mine for grouse/deer/beaver/etc. with good results. I pretty much guarantee your slug shooting results are predictable, the German gun makers use Brennekes, not Amercan style foster slugs. They do shoot to a different point of impact.

Thanks for this. Threads like this are what CGN should be about.
Every once in a while I get the itch for a vierling, usually after reading a Double Gun Journal my father in law has given me.
What you did that stock is amazing.

What a beautiful restoration you did on that gun. I also appreciate versatility. I often carry a combo gun when moose hunting or bird hunting during a big game season. As many have said, it's amazing how often you see other animals that are in season.

wow just wow. remind me the merkel i used in 16 and 7x65r .... thanks for the memory. the more i think the drilling is one of the best combination for our kind of hunt. i do not have your talents or skills so really a great job done.

Beautiful setup. Did not see a spot for the .410 insert in the case though...
Oh it’s there...there is a long empty spot for it and I am still thinking about it! LOL

So I'm guessing that the friends who were shaking their heads at the beginning aren't doing that anymore?

Great job and thanks for posting!

They are still shaking their heads cause they are sick of me talking about it...LOL

Thanks guys. I will update soon hopefully with some hunt success shots.

Well, I connected with the drilling this weekend on Pelee island. The first game taken by me with this gun was a hen pheasant. Maybe a bit fitting, as that was my first game bird ever taken on my first hunt at 15 years old.

I admittedly fumbled with the greener safety a few times before I got onto it. I found myself selecting the rifle barrel when the action got hot. By noon, I had it figured out.

Felt good to get it back into use...

Now, onto big game...

Well done one your first game! As the Germans say "Weidmansheil"!

In my limited experience, I found I could never get slugs to shoot to a similar POI out of a double barrel gun (Browning 525 O/U, barrels shot about 30cm apart at 25m and changing brand of slugs and choke combo did little or nothing to improve matters!

Hope you can get the 7x65R onto something (I shoot an 7x64 bolt action, great chambering!)

I tried like hell to get that rifle barrel into use on a deer up North, but it didn't happen this year...

I opted to keep two barrels loaded with buckshot for close-up work and leave the 7x65R for anything else. I was hoping for a grouse or two and had the .22 insert ready, but the weather did not cooperate. Have to keep trying I guess.

Dilly, I thoroughly enjoyed reading your post & I have to admit, if I was family I'd love to be in your will to eventually receive such a beautiful keepsake!

Congrats!

Cheers
Jay

While drillings are not particularly my "bag of beans", You, Sir, have done a mighty fine job of bringing
that beautiful firearm back to life! You are to be congratulated, and it is particularly gratifying to see
you taking it afield and taking game with it, just as it was originally designed to do. Regards, Dave.
