My factory hunting rifle shoots between .5"-.75" all day! Really? Prove it!

So I went to the range tonight not trying for this challenge but almost did it anyway. I didnt meet all the parameters as there is 6 groups on the page and there were a couple holes on the top of the target that I covered with my sand bag. I was just doing load development and the 6 groups are all different charges of varget in .5 gr increments.
Smallest group was .136" and largest was .783" others were, .198" .356" .534" and .597" almost snuck into the challenge. Average of the 5 smallest would be .324"

Rifle is a bone stock t3 in 308w. Scope is an elite 3-9x40. Distance was 110yards. Used Caldwell bags as a rest. Used 155gr lapua scenar otm for the first time. Certainly won't be the last.

Just tried (and failed) the challenge with T3 Stainless Lite hunter in 30.06... I don't think the rifle is the problem. So obviously the ammo is the issue...;)

I am actually relieved that so few people have achieved this challenge. It took me a while to figure out that almost everyone on this and other boards are so full of crap about their abilities. Especially with handguns...

Honestly, reality is that very few factory guns are capable of this accuracy. I can do this challenge with my custom .22 LR rimfire rifle, but not my .270 Weatherby Vanguard... Obviously, the rifle is the issue. This target is 3 x 5 shot groups rather than 5 x 3 shot groups, but it is still 15 shots at 100 yards into sub 3/4" groupings... with a .22 LR... and I still can't do this with my .270... Is it me, or the equipment? The evidence strongly suggests that the equipment is the limiting factor. You are right though, some people are full of crap saying "it must be me" rather than admitting that their rifle isn't all that and a bag of potato chips... This challenge simply set the standard too high for the average factory rifle. I could have done 1" or better for this challenge, as the Weatherby guarantee is "Sub-MOA", not sub 3/4 MOA. That is all.

Range Day Jan 11/19. -8 and light winds. I've watched this thread for a long while, and never attempted it. I figured I'd break before the rifle, and toss the chance away around group 4 or 5. Today I gave it a go for the first time. Representing the left side of bolts, the rifle is a Tikka T3 lite lefty in 22-250. All factory other than I sanded the pressure points out of the stock to float the barrel. Hand loaded with 50gr. Ballistic Tips, and Reloader powder, it has always shot well.
First picture is my range and distance is 100 Yards.

Next up is the rifle and rest.... Please be kind to my crappy one piece plastic rest. Yes, probably should buy something better, but it works. I have shirts over the rubber ends so the rifle can "move" a bit more natural, and I have found that the rubber will grip the rifle just enough to affect groups.

The groups pinned on the backstop. I found the last group to shoot harder to do than killing a giant deer in hunting season... my nerves were getting to me.

The numbers for the groups are as follows:
1) .705 - .224 = .481
2) .485 - .224 = .261
3) .658 - .224 = .434
4) .512 - .224 = .288
5) .810 - .224 = .586
Average group size is .410

Great shooting. It’s nice to see a new entry in this challenge. I added you to the successful list.

Inspiring Chris p. Thinking if your Tikka 22-250 can do this I’ll try to get mine to. I presently don’t have a load worked up that would work for this but I’m going to see if I can find one. Curious to know what kind of speeds you’re getting and what kind of powder your using?
Thanks Craig

I am very determined to get my Savage Axis added to the list of successful applicants in this party. Here's a photo of my best effort so far; I'd say my shooting was a 14/15 although only 3/5 of the groups would qualify:

Indeed it is telling to see how many successful attempts there are; reportedly there's tons of folks who own hunting rifles that are 3/4 minute accurate, but only like half a dozen guys who have proven it here. This supports my theory that hunters, shooters and anglers are the biggest bull[exaggerate]rs in the wild world of sports! I really dig these "challenge" threads since they're all about getting outside to practice, rather than just buying more stuff. I put up another attempt yesterday while doing load development with a better hunting bullet in the .270 Winchester (shooting the 140 grain AccuBond as opposed to the 130 grain SGK) and again I came very close to accomplishing the challenge. This is friggin hard!
