My factory hunting rifle shoots between .5"-.75" all day! Really? Prove it!

They will be here soon enough with more excuses than a zebra has stripes as to why they don't need to prove they can outshoot any $2,000 rifle all day long with federal blue box ammo.

umm...thats not sarcasm....I really want to see it.........not sure if you have noticed or not but I am a fan of the savage/stevens movement.....

I don't think I own any complete factory stock hunting rifles? Maybe my 45 Colt Mdl 94 trapper. Everything else has at least bedding and trigger work done to it. Ruger #1 is pretty close to factory stock but it's a 1-1.25 MOA shooter, not a .5 rifle.

The key to the 2 challenges is that there are so many people who claim that there rifle is capable of this or that on any given day. Any given day is when it is cold, warm, windy, or calm. No excuses. Yes the last 4 days have been crazy cold so I can see that.

It does not matter if it is bone stock, slightly mod'd, or an out right custom. If the rifle can do it and one claims it can show it. That is it. There is a 222 on the other thread that 3 different people have tried the challenge and succeeded. That is truly a rifle that will do it. Another way I see it there are so many I want a precision rifle or my first precision rifle build what should I do threads. A precision rifle needs to be repeatable in it's performance day in and day out.

You may not need to prove this to anyone but yourself and that is fine. The thing about challenges is it puts you in another mindset. A mindset to concentrate before pulling the trigger. That is one factor in the man and his rifle being accurate.

My thoughts.

Is there a deadline? What's the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes? I'm leaving for Mexico today and won't be back for 3 weeks..................have to go and catch some big fish!

Yet the simple fact is, that some people live in climates where a cold day is 0 degrees, and others live where a cold day is -40. The two temperatures are not even remotely comparable, so the person living in the warmer climate has a huge advantage, in a challenge like this. When I post a statement that a particular rifle averages 1/2moa, it is just that, an average of what I shoot with that particular gun, and I certainly will not be out shooting groups at -30 or -40. As such, I wouldn't even consider attempting this challenge at this type of year. However, when spring/summer arrives, and the outside temperatures are somewhat comparable for all challengers, I would be happy to take part.

And if someone is claiming that their factory hunting rifle shoots sub 1/2moa, anywhere, anytime, I would be happy to invite them to our local range on one of our -40 January/February days, that we get to endure every year.

There is no deadline. This is just an ongoing challenge. And since it is a "challenge" and not a competition there are no prizes. There is only successful attempts.

That's fine Gatehouse. As long as your rifles still wear there original stock and barrel you are good to go. Aftermarket triggers, bedding jobs, and other minor modifications are fine.

****I edited the title of the post and took out the part that says "stock" factory hunting rifle**** I realized that stock means stock. Some minor modifications are of course acceptable. Sorry for any confusion. Have fun.

Are you saying you don`t trust some guys reports of their rifles accuracy, i have never had any reason to doubt a posters word about the groups they have shot.Laugh2

Can of worms there. Stock is stock, there should be no mods allowed whatsoever. You're allowing the guy with a Timney and bedding job to enter but not the box stock Rem 700 Sendero(bull barrel). Sounds fair to me.

The only problem with absolutely no modifications is what do you consider a mod? If someone sands the pressure pads on the forend that is technically a mod. So that would disqualify that rifle. Minor mods are ok just like the original post says. And I did modify the title and removed "stock" factory rifle.

An aftermarket trigger is one of the most noticeable mods a person can do to improve accuracy, but it's your baby, make the rules as you wish. :)

I will be attempting the challenge with an absolutely stock Tikka T3 lite in 30/06 shooting Barnes triple shock bullets. So for the record I am not making these rules to benefit me in any way.

One more question. I read your first page and just what to clarify the groupings. So, we only take 3 shots with 5 consecutive targets...........not 5 shots with 3 consecutive targets? The reason why I ask is that, not most, but many state 5 shot groups test the integrity of the firearm and shooter.

It is 3 shot groups 5 times. All 5 groups must be on the same paper with no other groups. Only the "official" groups on the target. The idea is to shoot 5 groups in a row that measure under .75". I decided on 3 shot groups because these are typically your average rifle that most people hunt with and not target rifles.
