My factory hunting rifle shoots between .5"-.75" all day! Really? Prove it!

I don't recall finding too many bench rest tables in the woods. I don't see the point of this thread for hunting accuracy..?

This Thread is a challenge to test the integrity of factory ammunition, homemade reloaded ammunition, the rifle and rifleman. Furthermore, to segregate the talkers from the walkers.

Ohhhhhhhhhh so close...

Today was my first day shooting my handloads with my .223, here's the result:

The last group was the one on the top right and I pulled my very last shot...

I'll load up some more rounds and try again next week.

Well, another weekend and another 50 rounds down range, and I came away with a successful attempt!!!!!!!

Here's the target (and yes, I shot 6 three shot groups, but all of them are within the limits):

Here's the best group:

And here's my gun (picture taken at home, didn't have a camera at the range):

Group sizes are:

0.461"
0.406"
0.327"
0.425"
0.581"
0.690"

For an average of 0.482" center to center.

The gun is a Savage Model 11 chambered in .223 REM, and it is bone stock, exactly the way that it came out of the box. It is wearing a Tasco 6-24x44 Target/Varmint scope (Yes, a $99.00 scope), I was shooting off of the cheap Stoney Point sand bags that came free with the scope, and using my own hand loads.

Load data:

Federal Brass
Federal Small Rifle Primers
Hornady 55gr. V-Max Bullets
Accurate AA2230 Powder, 23gr.

Loaded on the Lee 50th Anniversary reloading kit.

WOOOO HOOOOO!!!! Now I can move on to shooting 5-shot groups!

^^^ :D Right here!

So where are all the Savage vs Remington guys now.

I remember when I was just a teen. We had a challenge to shoot a 22LR through the centre of a lifesaver. That was interesting.

We had a similar one, but possibly a little bit easier. But a lot more cleanup.
We had to try to shoot through the open end of a pop bottle to break out the bottom of the bottle only.
But we did it with open sights.
We sure cleaned up a lot of glass from the misses, lol

Quick question, will you accept On-Target for measuring, or does it have to be outside to outside minus caliber with calipers? I only ask, because it would seem like the larger the caliber/higher the velocity, the more disadvantage you are at when it comes to the bullet holes stretching paper vs using software, which is true C2C. My last 5-shot group differed by .07" from measured to software spread.

Well, I haven't been on the fourms much lately, that summer thing hit and I'm back to work full time (6 - 7 days a week) so it doesn't leave much time for anything else... But... Today I found time to get out the range for the first time in 5 weeks!

I changed the way that I was building my hand loads, so I figured I'd try this challenge again to see how they compared...

In the beginning I was weighing EVERY load on a beam scale and a digital scale, then trickling powder making sure that every single load was exactly PERFECT. I was also checking every completed cartridge to make sure that my press was seating them exactly the same.

Last night I didn't have a lot of time to build my loads for today, so I was taking the casings and putting them up to the bottom of my Lee Perfect Powder Measure and dispensing the powder directly into the casings, then seating the bullets and not measuring anything...

Here's the results from the range today:

Smallest group:

Group sizes were:

0.349
0.253
0.547
0.383
0.485

Average group size: 0.403

Same gun as before, my Savage Model 11 chambered in .223 REM, still bone stock, exactly the way that it came out of the box. It is wearing a Tasco 6-24x44 Target/Varmint scope

This gun really does shoot .5" groups ALL DAY!

That is some fine shooting AndrewNS. I will add you to the original post.
*EDIT*. You already completed the challenge.

Yes, like I said, I changed the way that I was building my hand loads, so I figured I'd try this challenge again to see how they compared... Turns out that the quick throw together loads worked better...

Well I didn’t make the under the ¾” limit but I did make it under an inch and did impress someone else at the range. I can make it under ¾” but I would have to shoot it at 5 different trips to the range. It seems the firearm shoots well the first couple of groups but then opens up. I do wait a long time between groups as I usually shoot another firearm and walk down to check the groups. By the way this was with a Savage Axis and it does upset me that a firearm I paid $302 with a scope delivered to my door out shoots firearms I paid more than 10 times for including a scope. I will try again as it is nice to see what I can do but I usually do not worry about this kind of accuracy because of where I hunt and what I am hunting for. Please correct any mistakes I have done with this post or measuring the groups.
