My Failed Attempt at 50 yard Challenge

After doing some extensive ammo testing today with my Savage MKII BTVS I gave it a "shot" with what looked like the best grouper of the lot: Lapua Center-X. Group on my test target was 0.477" and I shot another warmup group before starting the challenge to get the lube back in the barrel 0.423". Attempt groups were: 0.536" 0.602" 0.531" 0.408" 0.426" average 0.5006". So I managed 4/7 sub 1/2" groups. When I measured test groups back at home Remington/Eley club was my best at 0.382". Success is inevitable with these results just keep at it! I also found the tables at my range rather wobbly itself. Looking down the spotting scope at a 200 yard target was like being on an offroad atv so bouncy.

So I decided to take some advice!

Today I drilled out my beautiful stock and installed a stainless steel stud. I purchased a Caldwell bipod, as well installed a Nikon Prostaff 4x12x40 that was on my 22-250.

I also took the time to make up some shoot and see targets with me to the range tomorrow. I'm going to head out in the morning and see IF I can tighten up my groups.

That is such a purdy rifle! I like laminated stocks and those blue accents are cool. How much different ammo have you tried so far? I'm up to 16 kinds with my savage and only 2 are real performers, and handful of potentials but not 1/2" in the single test group I shot. Good luck have fun!

looks good, other than your bipods backwards. The way you have it right now, as soon as you try to load the bipod it will fold up.

For a sand bag, I'd grab a old sock and fill it with sand or bird seed (I think this is what JSA tactical uses, as they made my range bag stink like bird seed).

Lol! I didn't even clue into that! I just went and rotated it! Thanks for pointing it out. I was thinking of using a rice bag that I have at home. The ones you toss in microwave when ur sore. I as well have a Caldwell larger bag my buddy let me borrow to try. I'll see what I prefer and go from there.

Wheeler, another thing to consider is your target and the size of your aim point. Make it as small as your optics will allow, it's easy to get lost in a larger dot. My targets outer ring is about .280" diameter. Good luck with your challenge. I shot this on Monday and failed but it won't be long I hope.

Well I had a great morning at the range, unfortunately the weather did not want to co-operate. Very windy with strong gusts. However I was successful at achieving under 1/2" groups, but not consistent. Again, I'm still using my stock pile of ammo. Today I was doing very well with CCI Velocitors & Remington bulk believe it or not! I found that if I knocked off 5 rds in succession I would have a super tight group, ( this happened a few times ) but know this is not the best way to get 5 good groupings. I liked the bipod but for only at the 25yrd mark. I prefered the Plastic Caldwell rest overall. My targets are 1" in diameter. I can surely paint some that are smaller. I'll try that on my next batch of targets. I didn't bother to take any pictures today... I'm having fun, and will continue to practice, practice, & practice some more. I'll eventually make my way down to P&D and grab some match ammo.

I'm unsure of how many rounds have been fired since I installed the new Kidd bolt into the Dlask receiver, but know it's well under a 1000. I would "assume" they require time to break in correct?? I ended up cranking off the Remington bulk to aid in this...
