My First and ONLY Rifle -- Pictures Page 1/20/25 -- Range Review Page 28 --

Update:

Turns out it is not a McRee stock, but it is based on it, just like before it was a Savage, or a Remington that it was based off of. From what McRee says, they are very flattered ;)

Sorry if I caused any confusion!

Thanks,
- Koshy

Crap well... I accidently messed up my post.. I will try again...

Sooo first ORA Winter Training is complete, it was a great day, learned lots and met lots of great people :)

My thanks goes out to Bob, Camron, Mike, Thomas and Terry. I cannot wait for their next one next month!

Rifle Update:
Okay, so it seems every outting the rifle (and probably me) are getting much better! Getting very close now to 5 shots through the same hole at 50 yards (currently 4 shots in same hole and half shot to the left). The $75 Bushnell is doing its duty admirably but at times it can be hard to see shot placement and the turret turns aren't as precise as I would like them to be.

Good news though, come early next week (aka this week) my Alphamount (Rings) should be in for the PR-H 3-15x50. Although I may end up sending the PR-H back depending on what I am told over the phone. Why you ask? Well, after listening to a couple youtube videos, not to mention playing with the turrets, it seems the "clicks" are audible (very) when tracking down on the elevation, but when it comes to tracking up on the turret it isn't very audible if at all... although please note you can still feel the "clicks" very easily.

Now on to my rifle! So with a little over 100 shots through it I am loving it :)
Some notes I have made on the rifle and its operation:
- Adjustable buttplate and cheek piece work very well.
- Personally probably going to need an extra spacer for the buttplate, but I will wait and see what happends when I have the proper scope mounted.
- It appears when resting my head on the cheek weld and taking a shot, it is slowly moving the adjustable cheek piece forward (recoil?), after about 50 shots the bolt cannot fully operate (yes I made sure to tighten it down as much as possible). Contacting Steyr to see if this is a known problem, or something specific to me that can be resolved. Isn't a major issue as you just use an allen key to losen and move it back then tighten again, but still a tiny bit annoying :p
- Very smooth feeding, and the bolt can be operated very quickly, was a tad bit worried about it out of the box, but 100 rounds later it is very smooth!
- When ejecting the cartridge it leaves the tinyest (not a word) of scratches on the cartridge near the neck, but is very, very fine, so it doesn't appear to be doing any damage and you cannot physically feel the scratch just see it.
- Firing pin is very crisp and doing its job perfectly.
- Trigger is also very crisp, and very easy to tell when the trigger will break... and does so like glass!
- Folding stock is very effective and easy to use.
- Monopod works very well.
- Manual has no instructions on how to remove the muzzle brake or what the threading is on it, but I will post that information once I have it available to me.
- Hopefully will be trying a different muzzle brake on my rifle soon (being few weeks to a few months), I will do a direct comparison when I get the chance.
- Versa-Pod bipod, although very easy to use, I am noticing tiny metal shavings coming off it slowly but surely. With full lifetime warrenty I am not concerned though.
- Versa-Pod seems to have a lot of "give" in it... meaning you have to really load it (either forward or back), which can be frustrating, especially with the shorter buttplate (which can be added to very easily), but I will be fooling around with it some more and reserve judgement on whether it is a good bi-pod or not for later.
- With the last two comments being said, I am finding I will jump one or two targets over to the left. This could potentially be me, and something I am doing wrong, but I don't think so. It could also be the bipod or the muzzle brake... I will do some tests with these possibilities in the future and post back when I find out what it ended up being :)

I will have a true range report, once I have the setup with proper optics finished. Hopefully this will tide you guys over :)

I hope you all appreciate my honesty and have found this information helpful.

Thanks,
- Koshy

Scope Update:
Don't need a glove to pull out the illumination knob from the parallax housing anymore, really just needed to be pulled out a few times :)

Haven't talked to them yet, but when I do I will see how honest they are about this "issue" I am having. Although talking with them in the past, they have been very helpful and informative... wait until you see what they are doing for "Perfect" Parallax (Shot Show) :)

Here are the interesting things to note as I have played around with the scope a bit more:
1. Left and Right on the Windage is very similar in terms of sound (no noticeable difference) and is very noticeable. And exactly the same in terms of feel.
2. Going "down" on the elevation knob the "clicks" are very easy to hear and notice. Going "up" on the elevation knob BEFORE the second turn the "clicks" are hardly noticeable or non existent (although not even needed with how easy it is to feel each "click") but the second you get onto the second turn, it sounds very similar to the "down".
3. It is very possible #2 is intentional as it could allow you to KNOW beyond a shadow of a doubt which turn you are on, versus having to "feel"/"look" at the stub to see if you are on the second turn or not. But none the less I would like to know.

Don't worry guys, when I call tomorrow I will be very sneaky and crafty to find out the truth, so there can be no doubt, and when I find out I will get back to you all with what they said!

Fun Note: I have done a few scenario's where I look away from the scope completely and say, okay I am at milradian 4, I want to be on milradian 8, and you can very easily know when you are there, without looking even once! You can actually do it pretty quick to which is cool :)

General Update:
After a day (or night) of shooting the next morning all I want to do is shoot again! I cannot seem to get shooting at a range off my mind! And if I don't go shooting for a few days, I start getting hot and bothered and want to shoot!

Thanks,
- Koshy

P.S. My next shoot should be with the new scope ON the rifle!

I have no words after those photos.

A Precision rifle that would fit in with the blacks and EBRs... Want!!!

Thanks!

My Eberlestock pack came in today :) Cannot say I wasn't upset with myself for not getting it from inside of Canada... had I known UPS was going to bend me over the way it did, I would have just waited a few months for the pack... but I learned my lesson, won't let that happen again :) And don't bother asking how much they bent me over for, I shutter every time I think about it...

Scope Update:
Sending it back today!

Thanks,
- Koshy

I am starting to know what you mean... seeing stuff from Shot Show 2010... is becoming a huge pain in my butt :p

Accuracy International AX for example...

But I am VERY happy with my rifle right now, with very minor problems, one of which Steyr is looking into (cheek piece). So I don't see myself getting another anytime soon :)

I live in Burlington!

Thanks,
- Koshy

cool i am in trenton, one day you should come up to my range and have a blast no pun intended lol

Maximum range? :D

And, against me with my new toy.

Know what I think I just figured out? That's a picture of you in your Avatar!! hahaha :D

Anyway, at this rate my rig won't be ready till your rifle comes in! =(

Also I did the weighing, and I should be just a tad below the precision weight limit :D

Thanks,
- Koshy

Grrr....haha. Nope, my new 308 which I picked up this morning. :)

Who were you at the ORA day btw? PM me if you dont want to announce

I'm going to bet it is Bob!

Also does this mean we are going shooting in the near term? :D

BTW any idea where to get SEEONKS (T shaped Torque Wrenches) in Canada? I am having no luck finding them...

Bingo. The rest of the pic is on the ORA site, under the intro day ;) Too bad I can pose better than I can shoot :p

Awesome, so you are on the ORA website and I am in the BRRC club membership safety video :)

Scope Update:

Will have it back working flawlessly, Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. My thanks to Paul!

Thanks,
- Koshy

Um, I think Bobs board name would be....BOB RAYMOND ;)

When I talked to Rich @ Near, he said you can just get standard aircraft T torque wrenches which are set at 65 already so, source aircraft tool stores, probably easier to find than specialty firearms tools. Pulled the trigger on a near alpha btw. Damn you Koshy your not helping my wallet. Also landed a new G4 Operator which somebody didnt want from out west.

PS: I got screwed on my original F/tr purchase, so you'll have to wait and see what I bought instead.

Hhaha maybe ;)

Yea, SEEONKS are like that... 55-65 lbs T shaped torque wrenches... But looking for any standard aircraft ones probably easier to find in Canada :) Tell me if you find any.

You won't regret the NEAR Alphamount... they are top quality, top of the line, make mounting easy... very light... and god will strike you down before they lose their zero. Also I'm sure they don't lose their value as you use them :) WARNING: DONT LAP A NEAR ALPHAMOUNT, OR YOU RUIN IT!!!

Yes I talked to that guy, but then he disappeared for like a week, so I went else where, good news is it won't show dirt cus its dirt brown! But we won't mix ours up because mine is in Multicam (could also get different patches) :) The multicam looks like it won't show dirt or grass stains either which is great :) Also playing around with the bag and set it up for my body with a heavy sweater on, it is friggen epic, I love it so far all my gear fits easily, feels light as a feather and seems like really solid construction :)

Good thing with that bag for you is, you can attach mag pouches to it really easily for your pistol :)

I will likely be pulling the trigger on a lot of TAB gear soon, but I want to talk on the phone with them a bit first :) I'm not quite sure if a 72'x30' mat will be enough for someone of my size.

Dude you got screwed on your rifle?!? How is that possible?? I hope you managed another one that is good... but I am going to bet it is a 6x284 Savage :p

Can you tell I am happy and excited?:rolleyes: :ar15: :shotgun: :adult:

Thanks,
- Koshy

Yeah, well lets just say, that they sold me something that they didnt even have, even AFTER I asked to confirm its actually there, which it wasnt. And fast forward a month later, they still dont have it, and took forever to even find the damn order. Was given some answers, but seemed more like a run around, so I called back later to talk to someone else to see if they've started to rectify the situation, and......back to square one. Anyways, I said screw it, got my money back, and picked up something till I get my 6.5. So no, it isnt the 284 yet :) But what I got was at a great price too!

ps, We have some load development to do :)
