My First and ONLY Rifle -- Pictures Page 1/20/25 -- Range Review Page 28 --

Good rifle: check.
Ammo: check.
Money: :bangHead::bangHead:

:D

Until they decide to hold nationals in BC, I doubt I will do any cross-country participation any time soon.

Unfortunately Connaught is the only range facility big enough to accommodate that many shooters without going to a large base military base. The nice thing about Connaught is once you are there, everything is within a 5 minute walk. And all three range can be used at once. Last year the numbers were down only 255 shooters but in 2007 there was around 600 shooters.

You could likely fly to Ottawa quicker than I can drive there and I live in Ontario;)

600 shooters? That's a very healthy turnout!

Never say never, I guess. Although it will likely be a few years down the road when I have honed my skills a bit.

2007 was the year the Palma Match was held at Connaught. Teams from the US, UK, Australia, Germans, South Africa, Channel Islands, Kenya, West Indies, New Zealand and a partial team from Japan. But even on a year such as when the Palma match when it is held in Canada does not compare the the numbers every year in Bisley.

There isn't a better way to hone your skills than at the nationals. There are something like 25 matches just in the Grand Agg. Plus extra matches if you want. Bring lots of ammo:rockOn:

So why dont you sum up a range report with that american eagle beater ammo koshy :)

I tried this rifle last night, nice doesnt begin to describe this beast in person.

That sounds awesomely fun  :p

We should talk about this more, when I get my rifle from Mick in a couple months! :D I have tons of ammo but no gun to shoot it now haha ;)

You can give me your AMMO, I am happy to take it off your hands, free of charge of course ;)

Was just about to :)
Sooo we decided last night that we want to shoot! So here we are rushing to get to the club so that we can meet up and drive off to Al's to get some ammo, we get there 10 min before closing (meanwhile was snowing!). We cough at ammo prices but get some American Eagle 150gr x2 and Federal Premium 180gr x2 (wasn't much selection, would have prefered some 168 gr but it's all good). And then good old TR11 is like F-it and buys a Ruger 10-22 with Big Bore Hammer Forged Match Barrel and beautiful stock that even sits perfectly in my arms when I'm 6'4". So we decide to meet up at the club for 10 pm, so 4 of us later we arrive there at 10:30 :) Let the fun commence! We get the scopes mounted and everything with our ports set up (by 11 we are shooting) :)

So my experience with the rifle was amazing, I am use to a Single-Stage Trigger (Surprise), but this Direct Trigger (Two-Stage) is amazing once you get use to it, it is very clear when you are at the point of no return and it breaks very cleanly.

Thanks to the muzzle break the recoil is minimal, even one of my buddies G/F's kinda liked it so it couldn't have been that bad :p Although TR11 beside me didn't like me pushing the doors with my gases into his direction (muzzle break) :p

Able to fire 5 rounds in relatively rapid succession without a large amount of heat (not super hot to the touch, more warm).

Groupings were tight (as in same hole) when the bench was working, but most of the time the benchrest wasn't very good... I have some ideas how to improve upon that tonight :)

Magazine feeds perfectly so long as you make sure the bolt is brought ALL the way back. Love the feature that allows me to "special load" an 11th round without it pulling from the mag. When you are ready to use the mag just push up on the mag and then load from the 10 mag :)

Bolt seemed to operate well, I think it just needs to "break in" to become smoother, that or I just need to use a little more light gun oil. Sometimes it would be super clean, sometimes it would be a little bit of a struggle, it might also have to do with the amount of pressure I am using and position of my hand, it is definetly 10x smoother then the first time I used it though.

Not sure what else to talk about at this point, last night was more shooting to shoot, have fun and sight in :) Didn't touch the premium ammo. I will tonight though. I will for sure develop a better review once I am a little more familiar with the rifle, and have a chance to PROPERLY bench rest it.

So queue 3 am in the morning, feeling like it's time to go, but not tired at all! Drop one of my buds off at home, go to bed about 3:30 am... and take an entire hour to fall asleep! Friggen sweet!
Next morning I want to do it again SOOOO BADLY!!! :sniper: Try and perfect the benching to truly test the sighting in and the rifles capablility!

Results from the 25 yard mark was:
3 shots in same hole :p

Results from the 50 yard mark was:
3 shots almost in same hole (was a problem with benching it I THINK, especially obvious at this distance, hopefully can be resolved tonight).

If you guys have any specific questions, feel free to ask and I will do my best to give you a good, clear and fair answer.

Thanks,
- Koshy

OK, so some of my thoughts:

1. Very cool that it came with a case, I had to cheap out on mine. Do yourself a favour and get a sleeve, as you will shortly see that the case is a pain in the ass to haul around. Much easier to sling over your shoulder, especially since you have a folding stock - very cool.

2. My thoughts on a scope that can do it all for you are in your Optics thread. The alternative is to get a .22 for those days, probably a better idea.

3. You will want a palm shelf for the grip, that way you can have a more relaxed hold (less trembling for your offhand shooting).

4. Speaking of offhand shooting, take my work for it that YOU WILL NEED A SLING, I don't care how well-balanced that rifle is, it weighs over 12 lbs without a scope!

5. 2bad4u2 is giving you some very sound advice, I suggest you follow it.... yeah.

6. Your barrel won't last you 10 years. I'll be amazed if mine lasts 5 @ ~1500 rds/year

7. The only custom work I had on my rifle was shimming the mount & lining up the rings so that I could install my scope according to the scope's manual... Me liking my rifle so much had nothing to do with it lol, just wanted to do it according to spec, and Blaser doesn't make tapered saddle mounts, so I had no other choice...

8. Get some more trigger time with this rifle before setting up any goals or getting to deep into your thread ;) ... Don't bother with non-match ammo - once you try match, you won't want to go back. I've been there already lol

Enjoy

I dont know whats worse for concentration, a muzzle brake blowing my port door shut infront of my barrel while I fire, or someone on the other side of me hot doggin' an SKS with hot reloads.

Good shooting last night as well! Its really breaking in now. We need to stretch its legs past 50 though :)

I may have misunderstood this, but you're shooting this at 25 and 50 yds? Any results at those distances are meaningless; zero it at 300, and see how it shoots. From what I can see of this rifle, you should have excellent results even at 1000yds, assuming you can find a range that long. :)

Haha I would say the SKS is worse, he was just blasting away with that thing!

But you plinking last night through 10 rounds uber rapidly with your .22, that was soooo distracting (not lol).

I'm painting the range doors black with the gases from my break :p But at least with that new wood down there, the door cannot get into your lane anymore ;P

I think our next shoot needs to be at somewhere that has 100+ (like Silverdale)... hit me up when it is go time!

Yes, I want to strech it's legs, infact the rifle begged me last night in a dream to let it go pew pew at long distances :p

It should be able to get good results at 1000 yrds, but I doubt it will compare to a custom rig with 30-32" barrel :p

But hey that is why I will shoot Factory Rifle class (if I'm allowed), service conditions once I am extremely comfortable with my rifle, and Precision Rifle. Should be great fun!

are you planing on shooting down planes with that??? lol

No, cannot say that I am :p And somehow I think shooting "down" pictures of planes with it would be frowned upon :p What I do want to do is "Boom, Headshot" zombies at 300+ though hahaha ;D

very nice!

Thanks!

Okay! Final decision has been made!

Going with NEAR LOW ALPHAMOUNT with 34mm rings!
And a 3-15x50 Premier Reticle Heritage Double Turn MTC Scope (MIL/MIL -- GEN 2 XR Reticle)!

Should have it all by first or second week of January and cannot wait!

I will post back with new pictures and thoughts once I recieve them!

Thanks,

Interesting choice... What made you settle on it?

That is a very long story... haha I will try and trim it down and if you have some specific questions I will do my best to answer them :) But I truly won't know if it was the right choice till I can use it... should be here by the 15th of Janurary at the latest..

The magnification choice had to do with being able to use a low mount, as well as mirage (which can get to a point of useless when trying to get help with mirage, namely when you start seeing the target move around like it was walking :p), as well as I have talked with many shooters who say they shoot perfectly fine with 10-16 power to 1,000 yards... now this may not be the case for me... but I will find out for myself when I am ready for 1k distance in the next year or two (but I may shoot at that distance for fun before that time period).

The warrenty is second to none and far surpasses S&B (although this wasn't a huge determining factor for me as an S&B is built to last through submersion in hot water and then going in a freezer :p, not to mention many other things).

Also technically it surpasses a 4-16 S&B, in terms of eye relief, field of view, feel of the turrets on turning them and a few other elements. Although that is not to say the S&B doesn't have features that surpass the PR-H... but just in my case I felt that the features I was looking for were better met by the PR-H.

I would say the key thing to take away from my reading and research is that everybody is different, in both what they physically see through a scope and also in terms of what features they are looking for. And what might feel like better glass or better clicks to some, might not to others. So you just gotta try it for yourself and see!

So in the end I may not like the Premier... and decide to "trade up" for a S&B or an Hensoldt... at least I had a chance to try it and find out personally what I thought of it, also PR-H's sell like hot cakes, there are not many in Canada (comparatively) and the warrenty is with the scope and not the owner or a warrenty card.

So much for a short response ha!

Thanks,
- Koshy

I would have been shooting weeks ago if I could... but bloody PAL is taking its sweet time as it always does..
Thanks,
- Koshy

Justy wondering what you are waiting for? a PAL renewal? Or the registration card for the rifle? Once I have a rifle I have no problem taking it out the same day, as you get a temp card printed out when you purchase the rifle.
