Hello All;
Just wanted to share the story of my first buck with a bow. Been gun hunting for many years, and have always been intrigued with the bow. Last year I decided to get into it and had a lot of fun over the year getting proficient with it. The other morning, I headed out to the stand over a food plot (1 acre split between mixed clovers and brassica) at around 5:30. Crept in as quietly as possible and got set up. Around 6am, it was just starting to get light and the birds etc were waking up - it was a beautiful morning to be out. At about 6:15, I heard some rustling in the long grass on the north side of the plot and out walked the biggest buck I've seen in person. He came into the plot at about 70yds away - much to far away for me to be comfortable in taking a shot. I remember thinking "There's no way he's going to get close enough, but it was great just to see an amazing buck like that". He messed around with the clover for a little bit, and then started coming towards the brassica, which fortunately was closer to the stand. I tried not to go crazy as he sllllooooowwwwwllllyyy made his way closer. When he got about 35yds away, he turned and gave me a decent broadside view and I let 'er rip. He jumped, ran about 150yds and stood there for about 15 seconds and then went down. I was fortunate to have given him a double lung/heart shot and he expired quickly. I have an untrained eye, but he looks like a 6x7 and he was 290lbs. I have had a lot of fun with the gun hunt and I'm still looking very forward to the gun season here, but there's something very intimate about taking a deer with the bow. The excitement waiting for him to get in a range I was comfortable with was incredible and something I'll never forget. I couldn't have asked for a better hunt and just wanted to share a bit of my excitement. Best of luck to you all in your hunts this year. Jim.
